Ancient BeliefsThe Greeks believed in the geocentric theory, which stated that the Earth was the center of the universe. They did not believe the sun was the center because they could not detect stellar parallax, slight apparent shifts in stellar positions over the course of the year. The theory attempted to explain retrograde motion (planets moving backward) while keeping the universe revolving around the Earth. The theory was put to the test with the introduction of the Copernican Revolution. The astronomers Nicolas Copernicus, Tycho Brache, and Johannes Kepler developed, perfected, and explained theheliocentric theory (which states that planets orbit the sun).A.
