The course not onlyexplains classical Evangelical treatments of Christian doctrine but also presents a model for aunique Pentecostal theological method. The course is the preparation for additional systematictheology courses in the student’s program.COURSE OBJECTIVESUpon completion of this course, the student will be able to:1. Demonstrate a basic familiarity with the language and concepts of Christiantheology.2. Associate the individual doctrines of Christian theology with personal piety andministry.3. Analyze the evangelical formulations of Christian doctrines within the largercontext of contemporary theological discussion and development.4. Assess the unique contributions and challenges of the Pentecostal tradition to thearticulation of a distinctive Pentecostal theology.5. Explain the biblical foundations for the expression of doctrinal affirmations.6. The student will beexpected to take notes consistently during the sessions. The student should be preparedto discuss the assigned readings as a part of the class session.COURSE REQUIREMENTS1. The student is expected to attend all class sessions. Absences should be forextreme circumstances only. The limits established by the Seminary will beobserved. “Barring a serious medical emergency, credit cannot be granted forcourses in which a student has been absent beyond the equivalent of more thantwo weeks.” 2. The student is expected to read the assigned readings before each session tomaximize the classroom experience. To assist in this expectation, there will beseveral unannounced quizzes over the assigned readings during the course. Thequizzes will be presented at the beginning of the class session. In averaging thecourse grade, the lowest score on the quizzes will be dropped.3. The student should sustain successfully three examinations covering the lecturematerial and the assigned readings. The third exam will be given at the time ofthe Seminary’s final exams. The exams will be a mix of objective and subjectivequestions and will be given on the dates shown on the Course Outline above.Exams may not be taken off schedule unless an emergency arises.4. The student will participate in four online email discussions during the term inresponse to questions posed by the professor and announced in class. The studentwill be responsible to respond to the question and to at least one posting by afellow student, and provide the professor a print-out of the correspondence withinone week from the posting of the question. The discussion will focus on an aspectof the classroom presentations that allows the student to further theirunderstanding by interaction with their colleagues.5. The student will submit two five-page theological essays that express thestudent’s understanding of a theological topic, based on the classroompresentation and/or the assigned reading of the topic. The first essay is due at classtime on October 18, and should be on one of these topics: Doctrine of God,Doctrine of Revelation, Doctrine of Human Beings, or Doctrine of Christ. Thesecond essay is due at class time on November 29, and should be on one of theseTHE 511 Christian TheologyJames H. Railey, Jr. Page 4topics: Doctrine of the Holy Spirit, Doctrine of Salvation, Doctrine of the Church,or Doctrine of Last Things. The page limitation should be observed; if used, thesource documentation should be footnotes; and, the essays will be graded oncontent, comprehensiveness, and clarity of expression.GRADING PROCEDUREQuizzes 20%Online email discussions 10%Examinations 40%Theological essays 30%Grades are recorded and averaged on the basis of the following grade scale: A=12; A-=11; B+=10; B=9; B-=8; C+=7;
