Student Syllabus MAD 2104 SUMMER 2009 Instructor: Ahmet Emin Tatar Office: MCH 219/E Office Hours: M-R 11:00 – 12:30 or by appointment E-mail: [email protected] Course Website: www.math.fsu.edu/~atatar/mad2104 Prerequisites: You must have passed MAC 1140, Precalculus, with a C- or better and must never have completed with a grade of C- or better a course for which MAD 2104 is a (stated or implied) prerequisite. It is recommended that you have also completed MAC 2311, Calculus I with Analytic Geometry. Credit is not allowed for both MAD2104 and MGF 3301. It is the student's responsibility to check and prove eligibility. Course Description: The purpose of this course is to develop knowledge and skills in fundamental mathematical topics that are relevant to computing, particularly to the systematic development of software. This course is intended for computer science majors and other science majors with an interest in mathematics. It is a requirement of the computer science major. The topics covered in this course will include logical argument, sets and functions, propositional logic, techniques of proof, introduction to graphs and relations, and applications. In the text, Discrete Mathematics and Its Application, we will cover selected material from Chapters 1-3, 4.2, 7, and 8. Textbook: Kenneth H. Rosen, Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications (6th Ed.). Recommended Supplementary Text: 1. Kenneth H. Rosen, Student’s Solutions Guide for Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications (6th Ed.) 2. Dr. Kirby’s lecture notes, they can be either downloaded from the following website http://www.math.fsu.edu/~atatar/mad2104/CourseNotesMAD2104.pdf or may be purchased bound from Target Copy. Grading: Grades in this course will be based on 3 assignments and 3 exams. Each test and average of your assignments will make up %25 of your grade. The grading scale for the course will be as follows: A: 90-100; B: 80-89; C: 70-79; D: 60-69; F: 0-59. Plus/minus grade will be the upper/lower in each grade range. A grade of I will not be given to avoid a grade of F or to give additional study time. Failure to process a course drop will result in a course grade of F. Exam Policy: Exam dates are given on the Course Calendar on the Course Websites. You will take three tests. There is no final exam. The tentative exam dates are as follows: Test 1 Friday, Jul 10Test 2 Friday, Jul 24 Test 3 Thursday, Aug 6 All the tests will be given in LOV 201. No makeup tests or quizzes will normally be given. A missed test may be excused if the student presents sufficient verifiable evidence of acceptable extenuating circumstances. If a test absence is excused, then the final exam will be used for the missing test grade. An unexcused absence from a unit test will be penalized by a loss of one letter grade (or ten percent of the numerical grade). Absences from tests due to family social events will not be excused. Acceptable medical excuses must state explicitly that the student should be excused from class. Students must bring FSU ID cards to all tests. Homework Policy: Every Friday of the odd week, I will handout a set of homework questions which will be due at the beginning of the class the Tuesday of the following week. Assignments can also be turned into my mailbox in room 208. I will check my mailbox before I start the lecture on Tuesdays and any assignment dropped in the mailbox after that time will be subject to the late policy. You will be graded on any of the following that apply:  result,  reasoning, and  exposition, Late Policy Late assignments lose one letter grade per day (or ten percent of the numerical grade). Assignments turned in more than 2 days after it is due will not be graded and will receive a grade of zero. Any exceptions to this policy are made at my discretion. If you are ill or have a serious problem that prevents you from submitting an assignment on the day it is due, please contact me at once. Finally, please keep a copy of all your work. I cannot assume responsibility for lost items. Policy on outside sources and collaboration On written assignments you may use outside sources such as textbooks or websites. You may also work with another student in the course. You must cite all outside sources and collaborations. A statement of all sources used and all collaborations with classmates should be cited. If you work with another student your statement should include the contributions each student made. You may not turn in joint papers. All work turned in should be written in your own words and should not be a "cut and past" from another source. Credit will not be reduced for receiving help, but you are expected to understand everything you have turned in and credit for an assignment may be reduced if you cannot answer questions based upon work turned in.
