Mathematical Analysis I. (3:3:0) Topics include inequalities, progressions, relations, functions, systems of equations, matrices, linear programming, compound interest and annuities. Textbook: College Mathematics, (12th Edition), by Barnett, Ziegler, and Byleen, (2011), Pearson Education, Inc.: Upper Saddle River, NJ. Graphing Calculator: You will be required to purchase a TI-83, TI-83 Plus, or TI-84-Plus programmable calculator for this class. Other types of graphing calculators may work for some applications, but will not be discussed in class. The calculator is NOT optional. Calculators will not be allowed on certain topics. Attendance: Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. Attendance will be taken at every class period. Students that arrive more than 15 minutes late, or leave more than 15 minutes early will be considered absent for that day. Students that sleep during class or do not participate in class or lab activities will be counted as absent. Students that are talking during class will be asked to leave and will be counted as absent. Students that are texting during class may be asked to leave and will be counted absent. Any student that misses four consecutive classes or five cumulative classes will be dropped with a grade of X or F. Once the deadline for dropping a class is reached (see important dates), students with 5 absences or more will be assigned a grade of F when final grades are submitted. If a student is dropped for attendance reasons, he or she should not expect to be reinstated! Students new to college as of Fall 2007 may be dropped with a U, at the registrar’s discretion. (Absences are not considered excused or unexcused. They are just recorded as absences.) If a student has missed class 2 times or less and his or her daily average* is at least 80 after the fourth exam, he or she is exempt from the final exam. Tardies are included in this count. Two tardies = one absence. *The daily average consists of any homework and quiz grades given either in class or online.Grading: The final grade for this course will be determined in the following way: Exam 1 = 16% Exam 2 = 16% Exam 3 = 16% Exam 4 = 16% Final Exam = 16% Daily Average (Includes MyMathLab) = 20% Final grades will be assigned by the following scale: A = 100 – 90 B = 89 – 80 C = 79 – 70 D = 69 – 60 F = 59 – 0 All work for this class MUST be done in pencil. Any work that is done in pen will be assigned a grade of 0. All exams will be returned in class for your perusal, then will be collected and kept on file. Major Exams: There will be 4 major exams and a final exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. Tentative dates for the exams will be on the calendar attached to this syllabus. Exams MAY NOT be made up, therefore, every effort should be made to be in class on exam days. If a student is absent on the day an exam is given, he or she will receive a grade of 0 for that exam. At the end of the semester, the final exam grade will be used to replace the grade for one missed exam. A student who misses no exams has the option of using the final exam grade in place of his or her lowest exam grade. If the final exam grade is higher than any of the four exam grades, it will be used in its place. If the final exam is the lowest exam grade, it will count only once in the grade average. Daily Grades: Daily grades may be determined in several different ways. 1. Quizzes - There may be occasional quizzes given in class over the previous day’s lesson. No books or notes allowed. 2. MyMathLab Homework – Homework problems from each section will be assigned and completed using MyMath Lab. These assignments may be done as many times as needed to achieve the desired grade. There will be a time deadline that must be met. Any work not done by the deadline will receive a grade of 0. 3. MyMathLab Quizzes – There will be quizzes from each section given via MyMathLab. You will have two chances to take each quiz. The higher of the two grades will be recorded. There is a time deadline that must be met. Any work not done by the deadline will receive a grade of 0. MyMathLab: A portion of the grade for this course is based on problems worked online via MyMathLab. The access code for MyMathLab may be purchased online. There is a copy of the text online within the MyMathLab program, therefore purchasing the text book is optional. Those students that prefer to have a hard copy of the text should purchase the text/MyMathLab bundle to receive a discounted price. The textbook bundle is available at the SPC bookstore.
