Email: [email protected] Class: COMM 2326.001 Class meets: Thursday 4:00-6:30, and assigned days Practicum in Sports Broadcasting Lab: You will have additional work outside of class. General Information Textbook: The Art of Sportscasting How to Build a Successful Career by Tom Hedrick. There will be handouts and notes in class. Keep up with these because they will be part of the exams. Attendance Policy: The attendance policy in this class will be enforced. Students will begin the semester with 100 points for the semester for attendance. Each absence from class will affect your points for attendance. This class is a hand-on learning lab which is important for students to be present to learn. The attendance policy as stated in the college catalog will be enforced: “Whenever absences become excessive and, in the instructor’s opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. In addition, an instructor is required to initiate a student’s administrative withdrawal when the student has missed every class during any 14 consecutive calendar-days period excluding holidays.” This is four consecutive class periods. For an absence to be excused, you must present a note from your doctor or another instructor on appropriate stationery or letterhead. Grade Determination: The student’s grade will be determined on the basis of their performance in class. It will include class attendance, in-class participation, discussion, preparedness, and participation in broadcast events. Each activity will be weighted as follows: Attendance 100 points SPC Sport events 400 points Off-campus Events 2 200 points Evaluation 100 points Total Points 1000 points Purpose of the course: This course will provide students with a general knowledge of the fundamentals of sports broadcasting, sports television production and the process of operating the television equipment. Students will learn the process of planning for a television sports production. They will learn the pre-production, production, and post-production stages of the event. Students will learn terms used and writing style for the sports broadcasting.Course objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the equipment used in a television sports production in a studio or in the field. The student will also have knowledge of the terminology used in the sports broadcasting industry, and the process of producing quality sports production. Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodations must provide acceptable documentation of his/her disability to the Special Services Coordinator.
