Course Description: a. Military legal system and the responsibilities of leaders in the application of military justice. An overview of ethics in the military is presented in order to develop a foundation for a successful military career. Examination of fundamental values and principles of conduct in the profession of arms. Analysis of case studies of recent military operations will be covered. Oral and written communication, leadership assessment, APFT, attendance, and execution of training practices during leadership labs will also be part of the course. Other subjects, to include financial planning, career development, and career planning will be taught to ensure the transition from cadet to lieutenant. Lab includes practical exercises in professional development, training and leadership opportunities. 2. Text Materials: a. FM 27-1, Legal Guide for Commanders b. Hours: 0900 to 1700 hrs, Monday through Friday. Open door policy is in effect. Cadets may see me anytime I am in the office. 4. Grade Point Distribution: a. Leadership Performance (includes attendance and recruiting) 100 pts b. Class Participation 100 pts c. Oral Presentation 100 pts e. Daily Briefings 100 pts f. Mid-term Exam 100 pts g. Final Exam 200 pts h. APFT 300 pts Total 1000 pts 6. Course Outline: Per attached schedule. 7. Specifics: a. Leadership Performance (100 points). Cadets will be evaluated on their performance for their cadet duty position during the semester. The cadet’s first line supervisor will provide the instructor all counseling statements to help in determining the grade. Each cadet will develop an OER Support Form as part of the Mid-term and Final exam. In addition, each cadet will be required to conduct two recruiting events over the semester with MSU student organizations. Grading scale: 100-80 exceeds standards, 80-60 meets standards, 60-40 fails to meet standards. The PMS makes the final determination of the individual’s grade. b. Class Participation (100 points). All students are encouraged to participate in the class discussion and ask questions. Those who do not participate may get up to ten points deducted from their score each week. Bottom line: students receive a grade for class participation each week. c. Oral presentation (100 points). You will have one oral presentation this semester. It will be on an Army topic of interest to you as a future lieutenant. The presentation will be 15-20 minutes in length and will begin in February. Power point is authorized, but limited to 10 slides. d. Daily Briefings (100 points): We will start each class with a five-minute presentation from one student that discusses recent developments in the Global War on Terrorism. The purpose of this presentation is to enhance the awareness of issues Army leaders need to know about current military operations around the world. In addition, during each class we will analyze a short leadership case study. Mid-term and Final Exams ( 100 and 200 points respectively). Exams will be oral and will be conducted individually with the PMS ( with the exception of the OER support forms). The mid-term will includes topics covered from the beginning of the semester through Spring Break. The final will cover topics from Spring Break until the end of the semester. Notes and handouts are allowed. f. APFT (300 points). Your score on the final APFT in April will count for your final grade. We will not use the extended scale for scoring. 8. General: a. All cadets are required to take the APFT every month in accordance with PT Policy Memo. Anyone who scores less than 270 or who is over body fat will be required to attend remedial P.T. on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with cadre. c. Each cadet will attend leadership laboratory in the Arena area of Demonstration Hall on every other Tuesday from 1610 to 1800 hours. The leadership lab schedule is posted in the classroom, training, and company bulletin boards. You are responsible for knowing the schedule of each lab, including instructor duties and uniform requirements. d. There will be one mandatory Field Training Exercise (FTX) this semester: Spring FTX (2-4 April 2003). Any cadet wishing to be excused from the FTX must let the instructor know in writing two weeks in advance. Detailed information for the FTX will be disseminated via the cadet chain of command and OPORD. e. Students will lose 5 points if they are tardy to class or physical training and 10 points if they are absent from class or physical training. Excused absences are granted only by the instructor and should be obtained in advance. If you are tardy to class because of another instructor, obtain a written explanation that instructor. After the fact, excused absences will be handled by the Military Science instructor on a case by case basis. The cadet Admin/Logistics officer and
