Weiss. A graphing calculator is required for this course. The TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus are the recommended models. Please bring it with you to class. No sharing of calculators will be allowed on exams. Students will also need access to a computer with Excel.Prerequisites / Course Objectives: You should have taken (and passed with a grade of C or better) MTH 241. This is the second semester of a two-semester probability and statistics sequence (MTH 241 and MTH 242). In MTH 242 we expand our study of the basic properties of probability and statistics to include more advanced hypothesis tests, chi squared tests, linear regressions, analysis of variance, non-parametric models, and design of experimental investigations. You will also gain general knowledge of statistics and probability in order to understand the results of statistical studies relating to your own areas of interest. You can find more information at the math department’s home page:www.nvcc.vccs.edu/loudoun/scidiv/math/Attendance: I will be taking attendance throughout the semester. While attendance will not officially “count” toward your course grade the importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized and will definitely make a difference in your understanding and progress. Students should make every attempt to attendeach class and should not schedule conflicting appointments. In addition there will be weekly quizzes given inclass and if you are absent on the day of a quiz you will not be able to make it up. If you must miss a class avoid falling behind by reading the sections of the book covered in class that day, doing the homework assigned for the next class and getting a copy of a classmate’s notes.Homework: Homework will be assigned each class period and it is assumed that you will complete the assignment before the next class period. You should be prepared to discuss problems in class. Include all yourwork on your homework papers, as this will make it easy to use the homework as a review tool before tests. While homework will neither be collected nor graded it is highly recommended that you complete all assignments. As an added incentive all quiz questions and some test questions will be taken directly from the homework. Quizzes: There will be a 10-minute quiz given every Friday except on test weeks. The quiz questions will come directly from the homework assigned for that week. If you are not in class on the day a quiz is given there will be no make-up for the quiz. Each quiz will be worth 10 points. I will drop the 2 lowest quiz grades and your remaining quiz grades will be added together and converted to a percentage (out of 100) and count the same as one in-class test toward your course grade (100 points).Tests: There will be three in-class tests during the semester and a comprehensive final exam. Each in-class test will be worth 100 points toward your course grade and the final exam will be worth 150 points toward your course grade. It is expected that students will take the test in class at the scheduled time. If you are unable to be in class on the day of a test you must notify me beforehand (in person, by phone or by e-mail) to make arrangements for a make-up test. The make-up test will be different and more difficult than the in-classtest. You have until the next class period to make up the test for full credit. After that time you will lose 10 percent of your grade per day for each day that you do not take the test. All make-up tests will be done in the Testing Center (LR 251). It is your responsibility to go to the Testing Center and take the test during the make-up period. Excel: There will be a project assigned during the semester in which students will be required to use the statistical functions in Excel. This project will be worth 50 points. Students will also be required to use Excel on some of the final exam questions.Grading Scale: You will be graded on the following scale. course average course grade90 - 100 A80 - 90 B70 - 80 C60 - 70 DBelow 60 FYou can calculate your course average at any time by adding together all your test grades, quiz grades and project grades, dividing that sum by the total number of possible points to date and multiplying that result by 100.Incomplete Grades: If you find it necessary to take an incomplete (I) grade for the course you must have completed all the course work up through March 31. You also must notify me of your intention to take an incomplete by the date of the final exam.Help: If you are having trouble in this course ask for help right away – don’t wait. There are several sources of help available: Attend class regularly and ask questions during class. DO THE HOMEWORK. See me during office hours or by appointment. Go to the Math Center (room LR 204) for help. Math Center hours are: M, T, W, Th 9:20 AM – 9:00 PM F 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM S 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Free tutoring is available to all students. Ask in the Counseling Center. E-mail your question to me and I will try to answer it by e-mail.Cheating: If you are caught cheating while taking a test you will be given an F for the course.Noisemakers: Turn off all cell phones, pagers, PDAs etc. during class.Accommodations: If you have a learning disability and believe that you are entitled to accommodations for your disability you must bring a document from the Counseling Center, signed by a counselor, which details the accommodations to which you are entitled.E-mail: E-mail is an effective form of communication outside the classroom. Please put MTH 242 in the subject field any time you send me an e-mail. If you want to discuss your grade via e-mail it must be done using your NVCC e-mail
