Course Description: This practicum is a continuation of Practicum II. Prerequisite: PSY 681 with a grade of B or better. Course Objectives: 1. Expand clinical skills through formal, structured supervision. 2. Be knowledgeable regarding ethical and legal issues, the therapeutic alliance, transference/counter transference, therapist self-disclosure, diagnosis and case conceptualization, intervention strategies, and termination issues. 3. Have opportunities to collaborate with other treatment team members. 4. Become sensitive to issues of cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity and its impact on counseling.5. Develop proficiency in writing case presentations, progress notes, and other clinical documentations. Course Assignments: 1. Punctual attendance and active participation in class discussion and activities. A student missing a class must make up the absence by special assignment. 2. Two video or audio recordings of counseling sessions. 3. Present two formal case staffings. 4. Readings will be assigned twice. A one-page reaction paper will be due both times at the following meeting. 5. A Practicum Reaction Paper which will include, but not be limited to the following: A. Strengths identified B. Functional liabilities identified C. Personal assessment of career direction as a counselor D. Overall evaluation of the experience. (Do not talk directly about the site – this is to be covered in your Site Evaluation.) 6. Submitting all required forms as designated in the Nova Southeastern University Practicum Handbook in a timely manner. All required assignments, including due dates, will be reviewed on the first night of class. Grading Criteria: Attendance and Participation 45 points Demonstration Tapes 20 points Treatment Plan/Presentations 40 points Practicum Reaction Paper 30 points Site Supervisor’s Evaluation 35 points Log Book 10 points Site Evaluation 10 points Reaction Papers 10 points Total 200 points A = 90% or above (180 points and above) B = 80% - 89% (160 points - 179 points) C = 70% - 79% (140 points – 159
