Good vs. BadCurrent LectureVocal Group Rock ‘n’ Roll- Predecessors:o Black vocal harmony groups, 1890s-1900so 1930s,1940s: Mills Brothers, Ink Spots- Vocal traits based in Gospel traditions:o High tenor against low, rumbling basso Backing harmonies fill in chordo Call and response between lead tenor and backup singers- General style characteristics:o Mix of rhythm & blues and pop singingo Sound Lead vocalist supported by 3-4 backing vocalists Tight, close harmony singing (“barbershop style”) Backup sings nonsense syllables (Doo-wah or Na na na) Instrumentalists deep in background (except for solos) Band: guitar, drums, bass, piano, saxophone (soloist)o Form: Many songs in standard song form, AABAThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
