Jung- developed the term “Collective Unconscious”: where people store the cumulative experiences of past generations, collective unconscious develops archetypes (mother archetype, father archetype, sister archetype, etc.)- People struggle with their persona (face they present to others) and private self- Males and females have both Anima (female part) and Animus (male part) and we can reject those parts of ourselves- Gender roles- one’s ancestors over the course of history, not social influenceD. Jung emphasized: all humans face a fundamental task; finding unity in the self- “the self”- aspect of collective unconscious that functions as an “organizing center: of an entire psychological system- Mandalas symbolized people striving for the whole, complete sense of self- Cross cultural-Jung saw symbols of this search for “The Self” across cultures show peoples attempt to grow in self-understandingE.
