Current LectureWhat Exactly is the sacred?  A mysterious power that evokes a mixed response. It is both repulsive and attractive, both pure and dangerous, both sanctifying, defiling or polluting. o It is “power that awakens a profound feeling of awe which manifests itself in both as fear and as being attractive. There is no religion whatever without terror, but equally none without love…. Physical shuddering, ghostly horror, fear, suddenterror, reverence, humility, adoration, profound apprehension, enthusiasm- all these lie in nuce within the awe, experience in the presence of power (Van der Leeuw,48, Livingston, 38). Rudolf Otto (The Idea of the Holy) The sacred is the numinous, a mysterium tremendum and fascinans” o “Numinous”: the experience that evokes the “creature – consciousness” or “creature feeling.” a feeling of “a creature submerged and overwhelmed by its own nothingness in contrast to that which is supreme” - Ottoo Mysterium: it is the mystery that lies beyond our capacity to comprehend or conceptualize fully.
