A Utopian MomentCurrent Lecture:Blade Runner: 1. Labor: The use of the word “off-world” – slave labor, colonization, artificial spaces. Population isn’t defined by race or gender or ethnicity, privileged and slaves separate them. - Progressive class-consciousness – I understand my place in society and am starting to reject it. Cognitive mapping happens here because we find our place in the world.- Batty & Deckard: “Quite and experience to live in fear isn’t it? That’s what it is to be a slave.” - Rachel: “I am not in the business, I am the business.”- Can we give ourselves purposes and experiences other than those for which we are designed? Can we act on our freedom? These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- As soon as we can say, I am a slave and I refuse. “I want more life fucker.” - Can we act on our freedom – are we living organ donors? Can we say I know I was designed to do this/ power is forcing me to act this way but I want to do something else.2. Control vs. Freedom: Photograph, memories, implants – a strange obsession with life because we know its short. Fake memories to give the illusion that Rachel has a past andhas meaning, to give someone fake memories is like being engineered to remember things in order to control us. In what degree are our memories ours? - Jamison says we give ourselves images of the past- but they hold no real weight in out own lives. Can I really divide what is mine and what has been produced for me?3. Finitude v. Obsolescence: Finitude: Intrinsic human limitations, things that define us. - These boundaries are under attack – Crary with sleep, Jamison talks about the environment, past and psychic life has been taken over. A lived relationship with these things is now externally dictated. Lastly with R. Scott and Death: the individual body as intrinsically orientation as participating in one’s relation to the world.- Obsolescence: Externally dictated termination- Denigration of long-term individual survival (Crary)- Four-year life spans; accelerated decrepitude (Scott) - Despite our longer life, we have lost our visionary capacity.4. Time: Genetic Design – total colonization of life- Artificial animal design – astronomical prices for real animals- creation of fake animals- Trash – synthetic obsolescence as a replacement for natural death – no more dyign we just become obsolete.5. Cityscape/ Housing: Total Media scrape – someone is always watching this city. No safe spaces from disembodied consciousness.- Panopticisim: Streaming lights into all apartments 6. The Human - Replicate Dedifferentiation: Moments where the human and the robotic collapse into one another, inability to see difference between two, fragile boundaries. I know what’s going on in your mind because I have left it there, its been planted.- Is Decker a replica or human?7. A Utopian Moment: Can we undergo experiences that are outside of our design; can we notice and appreciate things that haven’t been pre-programed for us? Is there a margin to imagine a space outside the space we are supposed to live in? If so then that is a spark we need to follow to create a better
