Psych 322 Lecture 5 Outline of Last Lecture I. Assessment and i’s purpose in the scope of diagnosis. Intro to DSM.Outline of Current Lecture II. Alternative to DSMIII. Diagnostic & assessment proceduresIV. Projective testsV. Behavioral assessmentCurrent LectureII. Alternative to DSM: NIMH & RDoC- Moving away from symptom based diagnosis.- Bio/neurological markers- Not starting from current diagnosis- Multiple dimensions and perspectives- Dimensional approach vs strictly categoricalHomosexuality as a disorder removed after DSM III RDoC: Research Domain CriteriaIII. Diagnostic & assessment procedures:1. Self-report measure2. Unstructured clinical interview3. Structures clinical interview4. Semi-structured interview1. Self-report measure: Used mostly for screening – questionnaires, surveys, polls etc.- No training needed for administration- Cost effective and quick- Reasonably reliable- Cannot get a diagnosis this way = ie: people don’t read the instructions.2. Unstructured clinical interview: typically used initially to make client comfortable- Requires a well-trained clinical professional- Very poor reliability- People ask different questions- Different aspects emphasized of disorderThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Theoretical predilections3. Structured clinical interview: used once client is comfortable answering qs- Trained interviewer- Identical series of questions- No deep probing or clarification of answers to questions asked- Little room for judging clinical significance. 4. Semi-structured interview: most common among researchers & hospital settings- Trained clinician- Can ask for clarification to answers and can judge clinical significance.IV. Projective tests- Unstructured stimuli presented to subject - Subject projects meaning/structure onto stimuli’- -projections reveal hidden motives- Rorschach inkblot test- Thematic apperception test (TAT) : scenarios V. Behavioral assessment- Good for children or behaviors that an individual cannot explain- ABCs : Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence- Can be done my interviewer or self.Intelligence tests: WISC-III &WAIS-III – academic potential in comparison to peers.Neuropsychological tests: likelihood & source of brain dysfunctionNeuroimaging exams: EEG, CT, PET, FMRI – structure & function of brain PET(Positron Emission Tomography) : measures metabolic activity of specific brain
