POLYS 103 Lecture 10 Outline of Last Lecture I. Russia and Ukraine are both key components in the Ukrainian struggle. There are a lot offactors involved.Outline of Current Lecture II. Ukraine and Russia articleA. Continuation of relevant actorsB. key termsIII. Pakistan Articlea. brief overviewb. why US caresCurrent LectureContinuation of Russia and Ukraine Article -main issue are the ethnic groups in Ukraine-At this point Russia's economy is driven by oil-Northern parts of Ukraine are pro-west but Eastern parts of Ukraine are pro-RussiaContinuation of Relevant Actors:3. NATO/USANATO is a military organization formed when there was fear that the Soviet union would take over European Union. US Created it to bring Europe states together. It was used only once, during September 11, 2001. Ukraine is not a NATO member. USA is the dominant member of NATO but USA's interests are not necessarily the same as NATOs.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.4. Germany/EU European Union is not NATO- it is an economic union. Dominant player is Germany. The dominant source for energy for Europe is Russia because Russia supplies Europe's oil. The problem Europe is facing is that it can't put economic sanctions on Russia without hurting itself in the process.v The Russian economy is hinged on gas and oil.5.Poland/Baltic States Dealing with being NATO members but not receiving much promise of protection. Russia is a threat to these states. Some key terms: hegemon- means the bigger a state is, the more say it hascollective defense- all for one, one for allsanctions-other option other than violence against states to make them do something. Peace in Europe- 1st 2nd world wars started in Europe. Violence in Europe has a long history. Europe can trigger great conflict in the rest of the world.Missile Defense- Trying to build missile defense in Europe against the middle east and this now could be seen as building defenses against Russia. Oil/Energy- it is a political tool. Everyone needs it. Nationalism- drives states to feel good about their own countries. Drives Putin's actions and it also drivesUkraine.Money vs. Security- money spent to defend a country can be useless if the country never needs defended. In reality, the military is needed quite rarely.Democracy-Russia is not a democracy. Ukraine is. Should US favor Ukraine because it is a democracy and not Russia?FIFA/F1- Russia is hosting the world cup in 2016. Should this be allowed because it will flood Russian economy with tourist money. Should politics invade international sports?2Main take home message from all this: everything is connected to everything else. Policy aimed at curbing one thing can have a whole host of consequences on other things. Sanctions: Europe doesn't want to put sanctions on Russia because they don't want to hurt themselves. Smart Sanctions- sanctions that focus on hurting high ranking officials and the people that are causing the conflict instead of the general public who isn't involved. The goal is to be more effective that using economic levers but smart sanctions aren't exactly effective. Pakistan:the article is on the protest that happened and the government stepped in.Why does the US care? Because Pakistan has nuclear weapons. Pakistan has also been involved in a lot of wars-involved with India in many wars-Right next door to Afghanistancivil military affairs in Pakistan:there is a long history of the military stepping into politicsless history of democracy It is a fragile state: (1947- became a
