PSY 322 Abnormal Psy Exam 1 Study Guide Lectures 1 6 Lecture 1 August 27 Defining a disorder Explain the three things needed in order to be classified with a disorder Classification 1 Deviance or atypical behavior this cannot be a sole determining factor for a disorder Atypical behavior is considered differently in each culture 2 Maladaptive behavior that interferes with important life functions and creates consequences to the health or the life of the individual 3 Distress having painful or upsetting feelings The History of Abnormal behavior Explain the classical Greek and Roman views specifically those of Hippocrates Hippocrates hypothesized that there were 3 categories of a mental disorder 1 mania 2 melancholia 3 phrenitis brain fever Hippocrates is also the first scientist to consider the biological side of mental disorder He hypothesized that these issues were created within an individual when they had either too much or too little of 4 specific bodily fluids called the 4 humors These fluids are as follows 1 Blood sanguine correct amount makes individual happy cheerful and optimistic Too much and the individual will experience insomnia and delirium 2 Black Bile too much of this fluid causes depression or melancholia 3 Phlegm too much of this fluid makes individual apathetic sluggish and abnormally calm under stress 4 Yellow Bile too much of this fluid makes an individual hot tempered Lecture 2 September 3 Be able to list the basic historical patterns of treatment beginning with the humanitarian reform and ending with modern treatment The humanitarian reform began in Paris where doctors began to focus on the ethical treatment of patients instead of throwing them in jail like cells We then see an emergence of moral therapy This has a focus on patient s social individual and occupational needs This method focused on morals more so than disorders We then progress to the mental hygiene movement This improved the quality of care and extended care to all in need This
