AuD Assistants - An audiology assistant is a person who performs delegated tasks that are prescribed, directed, and supervised by a certified and/or licensed audiologist - AuD assistant must appropriately registered/licensed if the state so requires a. AuD Assistant-Educational Requirement- Associate’s degree in audiology- Bachelor’s degree from a college with an audiology assistant certificate program- Bachelor’s degree with a major in the area of audiology b. AuD Assistants- Improve access to patient care - Increase productivity - Reduce costs c. AuD Assistant Guidelines - The roles and tasks of audiology assistants are assigned only by supervising audiologists - Competency-based training - Supervision (periodic, documented)- The supervising audiologist maintains the legal and ethical responsibilities for all assigned cases d. Roles and Responsibilities of the Audiology Assistant - Scheduling patients- Performing checks on hearing aids - Assisting audiologists in treatment programs - Conducting hearing and tympanometry screenings on older children and adults (withoutinterpretation) - Conducting Otoacoustic emission screening - Assisting audiologists in hearing testing of pediatric patients - Performing pure-tone hearing screening and universal newborn hearing screening tests (patient who is coming back in to check their hearing thresholds; re-administration of audiogram) e. AuD Assistants are NOT permitted to…- Select clients for service - Interpret data/observations - Participate in team/case conference without supervising AuD- Formulate/modify treatment plan - Sign (can sign progress notes, but need to be signed by licensed AuD)- Disclosing clinical information- Make referrals f. Audiology Assistant Continued- Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationists (COHCs):o Otoscopic screening and pure-tone threshold testing for the purpose of hearing conservationo Basic counseling of employees on test results o Fit and train employees on personal hearing protection devices o Hearing conservation education, training, and motivation IV. Supervising Audiologist (AuD)- State license - Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology granted by ASHA a. Supervising Audiologist-Roles and Responsibilities - Administrative actions - Performance evaluations (skill assessment) - Delegation and supervision of specific tasks to the support person- Proficiency assessment- Providing feedback to the audiology assistant V. Audiology Assistant - Patients must be informed when services are to be provide by support personnel- Each month 10% of services by assistants must be under director supervision with an additional 10% supervision either directly or indirectly - Supervisors must be licensed and have been practicing for 2 years and may supervise a maximum of 3 assistants at any given time VI. Code of Ethics -Code of Ethics are specific statements of minimally acceptable professional conduct or ofprohibitions and are applicable to all individuals.- ASHA’s Ethical Practice Board - Revised 14 times since 1930 (discrimination, conflict of interest, gender equality, professional development, informed consent, confidentiality, telepractice)- 4 principles of Ethics:1) Responsibilities to hold paramount the welfare of persons served professionally 2) Maintain the highest level of professional competence and performance3) Promote public understanding of the professions-support the development of services designed to fulfill the unmet needs of the public, and provide accurate info in al communications (setting up a literacy group)4) Honor their responsibilities
