ATHTRN 1100 ATHLETIC TRAINING SKILLS I 2 CREDITS Summer 2014 Instructors Email Office Location Office Phone Alison Mosel mosela missouri edu Mizzou Arena 573 882 8126 Jen Artioli ArtioliJ missouri edu MATC 573 884 0403 Course Description An introduction to the development of psychomotor skills for athletic training including taping and wrapping skills for the lower extremity wound care ice bag massage whirlpool and hydrocollator use are covered Graded on A F basis only Prerequisite Restricted to pre Athletic Training Majors only consent of instructor required Required Text Beam Joel W 2012 Orthopedic Taping Wrapping Bracing Padding 2nd Edition F A Davis Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course the student will be able to 1 Understand the formal application process to the Mizzou Athletic Training Program including a Successful completion of on line blood borne pathogen training b Successful completion of clinical observational hours with a Certified Athletic Trainer 2 Explain and demonstrate the proper techniques for basic prophylactic taping wrapping protective padding and bracing of the lower extremity 3 Explain and demonstrate proper basic wound and blister care procedures utilizing proper universal precautions 4 Explain and demonstrate proper technique for obtaining vital signs including respiration rate pule and blood pressure 5 Explain and demonstrate proper techniques for various applications of thermotherapy cold heat and whirlpool Assessments Evaluations QUIZZES There maybe weekly quizzes that will test your knowledge of material covered in the lecture portion of the course SKILL COMPETENCY Students will demonstrate proficiency in skills through evaluation from the course instructor or a Mizzou preceptor within the athletic training facility At the conclusion of the semester all skill sheets must be completed note due dates in course calendar STUDENT CLINICAL PORTFOLIO Students will develop a portfolio 1 black binder containing completed skill sheets
