ATHTRN 1100 - ATHLETIC TRAINING SKILLS I2 CREDITSSummer 2014Instructors: Alison Mosel Jen ArtioliEmail: [email protected] [email protected] Office Location: Mizzou Arena MATCOffice Phone #: 573-882-8126 573-884-0403Course Description: An introduction to the development of psychomotor skills for athletic training including taping and wrapping skills for the lower extremity; wound care; ice bag/massage; whirlpool and hydrocollator use are covered. Graded on A/F basis only. Prerequisite: Restricted to pre-Athletic Training Majors only; consent of instructor required. .Required Text: Beam, Joel W. (2012). Orthopedic Taping, Wrapping, Bracing, & Padding, 2nd Edition. F.A.Davis.Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:1. Understand the formal application process to the Mizzou Athletic Training Program, including;a. Successful completion of on-line blood borne pathogen training.b. Successful completion of clinical observational hours with a Certified Athletic Trainer.2. Explain and demonstrate the proper techniques for basic prophylactic taping, wrapping, protectivepadding and bracing of the lower extremity.3. Explain and demonstrate proper basic wound and blister care procedures utilizing proper universalprecautions.4. Explain and demonstrate proper technique for obtaining vital signs, including respiration rate, pule, andblood pressure.5. Explain and demonstrate proper techniques for various applications of thermotherapy (cold, heat, andwhirlpool).Assessments/Evaluations :QUIZZES: There maybe weekly quizzes that will test your knowledge of material covered in the lectureportion of the course.SKILL COMPETENCY: Students will demonstrate proficiency in skills through evaluation from the courseinstructor or a Mizzou preceptor within the athletic training facility. At the conclusion of the semester all skillsheets must be completed, note due dates in course calendar.STUDENT CLINICAL PORTFOLIO: Students will develop a portfolio (1” black binder) containingcompleted skill sheets and other assignments. This portfolio will be maintained throughout your athletictraining academic career. The portfolio must be handed in at the conclusion of the course for review by thecourse instructor.OBSERVATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Under the direction of the course instructor and the Athletic TrainingProgram Clinical Coordinator students will be assigned observational hours. Students will perform these hourswith MU Athletics under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer. These hours will occur outside ofregular class meeting times.Grading: A = 94 and above C = 74 – 76A- = 90 - 93 C- = 70 - 73B+ = 87 - 89 D+ = 67 - 69B = 84 – 86 D = 64 – 66B- = 80 - 83 D- = 60 - 63C+ = 77 - 79 F = 59 and belowGrades will be weighted in the following way:Quizzes = 75 total ptsSkill sheets = 250 total ptsClass/Lab Participation = 75 total ptsTotal Class Points = 400 ptsSkill Competency Manual = Complete or IncompleteObservation Hours = Complete 15 total hoursProfessional Attire: Due to the practical nature of this course, students are required to come to class preparedfor lab activities. Students should wear or bring shorts and t-shirt/tank top.Observation Attire: Due to observation students needing to be identifiable while in the athletic trainingfacility, students are required to wear a white collared polo with sleeves, and either black (docker style) pants orshorts. All shorts must be appropriate in length which is considered longer then fingertip length when arms areat your side. You may not wear other schools or businesses logo’s while performing your observation hourrequirement.Competencies: 1) All skills assigned will be evaluated by a peer in your class and graded by a preceptor. 2)You must be evaluated by a peer prior to being graded by a preceptor. This will help you gauge your readinessto perform this skill live with a preceptor. 3) The preceptor’s grade will be the only grade counted forpermanent grading in the course. 4) You are required to complete all skills with a passing grade of a C orhigher. 5) Only the very first attempt of every skill being graded by the preceptor will count towards your finalgrade.Academic Integrity Policy: Academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university.All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly andhonorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students isdishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards academic dishonesty as anextremely serious matter, with serious consequences that range from probation to expulsion. When in doubtabout plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, or collaboration, consult the course instructor.Academic Dishonesty includes but is not necessarily limited to the following:A. Cheating or knowingly assisting another student in committing an act of cheating or other academicdishonesty.B. Plagiarism which includes but is not necessarily limited to submitting examinations, themes, reports,drawings, laboratory notes, or other material as one's own work when such work has been prepared byanother person or copied from another person.C. Unauthorized possession of examinations or reserve library materials, or laboratory materials orexperiments, or any other similar actions.D. Unauthorized changing of grades or markings on an examination or in an instructor's grade book or suchchange of any grade report.Academic Integrity Pledge : "I strive to uphold the University values of respect, responsibility, discovery, andexcellence. On my honor, I pledge that I have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance on this work."Students are expected to adhere to this pledge on all graded work whether or not they are explicitly asked inadvance to do so.The University has specific academic dishonesty administrative procedures. Although policy states that cases ofacademic dishonesty must be reported to the Office of the Provost for possible action, the instructor may assigna failing grade for the assignment or a failing grade for the course, or may adjust the grade as deemedappropriate. The instructor also may require the student to repeat the assignment or to perform additionalassignments.
