Lots have to do with funding or parent involvement. High percentage in BCS, surprising. II. How could this pertain to real world? a. Some of the higher incidence disabilities are served in general education-- good thing to ask about in job interviews is the percentage of students in your district. b. Important to know how your children will react and how to control your students. There is alot of diversity! It's important to know how to teach students with the different disabilities. Even gen-ed could have sped kids. Also to know how to support the parents of your students! c. Not only do students have disabilities, but parents do too-- youd have to communicate with them differently! d. From family perspective: important to watch out and have the knowledge to be able to take care of your children and give adequate attention/tools to exceeded. III. How can this help for teaching practices? We're responsible for providing supports for students with disabilities! Helps with planning lesson plans.a. Use people first language! "your son has autism" rather than "he is autistic"b. IDEA/Parent-Student participation: parents have access to student's file and deserve to be involved with student's education. Parents can bring whoever they want (can bring a lawyer). Children with IEPs, as teachers it is important to share information with parents. Shocking that parents do not know their rites-- teachers can help advocate to parents and inform them of their rights. IEP is a legal document. IV.
