This introduction to reading course is a four credithour course that emphasizes reading comprehension and study strategies to help you prepare for college level classes. This class is set up as a workshop instead of as a lecture class. This means that we will work collaboratively to increase reading comprehension, as well as, strengthen study strategies. By the end of the term, it is my hope that you willread intelligently for information gathering and understanding, as well as, for pleasure. Make connections between what you read and your own experiences. 3. Write clear summaries of what you read. 4. Learn effective study strategies. 5. Combine information from several reading sources. (e.g., for culture project)6. Read for pleasure and for information. (personal reading, culture project, text)DELIVERY METHODSThis syllabus contains assignments and information for multiple course delivery methods. ALL DELIVERY METHODSThese assignments are applicable for all delivery methods. I prefer hard copy, but will accept typed electronic media under some circumstances. CLASSROOMStudents meet face to face with the instructor and their classmates. DIRECTED STUDYStudent works one-to-one with the instructor. In all cases, refer to the syllabus for a comprehensive listing of the assignment descriptions and due dates. I prefer to receive written work printed, in class on or before the due date. If you do not have access to a computer or the internet at home, please use the computer lab.  The library at Hillsdale College is also available to you for a small yearly fee. Class information and requirements will be posted and distributed through email.ATTENDANCE: Attendance is extremely important to your success in this class and college. My goal is for you to be successful in this class. My own experience has shown me that students who don’t attend the classes are generally not successful. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact a classmate or the instructor before the next class meeting to find out what you need to do to prepare for the next class. I suggest you make a class friend with whom you exchange contact information.Quizzes, Tests and major assignments cannot be made up. Other assignments can be turned in on the day of return, with 10% point deductions. Anyone missing 5 classes will be automatically dropped from the course regardless of the reason.ACADEMIC HONESTY: Academic honesty is highly valued at Jackson Community College. A student must always submit work that represents his or her original words or ideas. If any words or ideas are used that do not represent the student's original words or ideas, the student must cite all relevant sources. The student should also make clear the extent to which such sources were used. Words or ideas that require citations include, but are not limited to, all hardcopy or electronic publications, whether copyrighted or not, and all verbal or visual communication when the content of such communication clearly originates from an identifiable source. Academic dishonesty could involve: - Having a tutor or friend complete a portion of your assignments - Having a reviewer make extensive revisions to an assignment; - Copying work submitted by another student  Using information from information services without proper citation.Students suspected of academic dishonesty will be penalized by taking appropriate action by assigning a failing grade for the work in question. Academic dishonesty will be documented by the instructor in writing and sent to the Dean of Faculty.Citations should be documented using the MLA Writing style.GRADING POLICY: Percent of Final GradeClass Participation* 10Reading Journal: Townsend Thematic Reader 25Variety Novels + Related Reports 45(3 @ 15 each)Culture Project 10Vocabulary Log 10*Participation means specifically that you have read the assignment and participate in discussion.
