Autism Movie NotesCurrent LectureAutism Movie Notes● What kinds of problems are associated with autism?○ lacks social and self help skills○ extreme tantrums○ innattentive○ half are mute and half repeat what others say● What kind of research forms the basis for treatment for children with autism?○ BF Skinners behavoiral approach using operant conditioning● Does the treatment for these children look like it is easy?○ The treatment looks hard and frustrating. It does not look like normal social behavoir, it looks similar to training a dog.● The independent variable for this “experiment” is Pam and Ricky’s social skills● The dependent variable is the treatment● What were the effects of the treatment?○ Pam and Ricky could talk and listen better and it also reduced self injury. Withoutthe treatment they regressed, lossing most of their language and social skills.The Actual Experiment● Experimental group = 19 kids with autism with 40hrs per week of treatment● Control group = only got 10hrs of treatment per week● What ways were the experimental group and control group treated the same?○ same age at diagnosis○ close in age when they started the experiment○ mostly boys○ similar socioeconomic status○ similar IQ’s○ no language previously○ excess self stimulation○ tantrums● The IV= childrens social skills● DV = treatment● Many of the children that had treatment 40hrs a week had an average IQ increase by 37 points and could be differenaited from “normal” kids their
