INF 322T 1st Edition Lecture 1Outline of Current Lecture I. Influence of Media on Children- The creation of smartphones and its affects on children a. What they see should be limited and restricted- A new program called- Play to Learn: parents have to visit the libraries and once completed the training, children get a tablet b. Average child sees about 30,000 television commercials a yearc. Every child today has access to the internet d. Goal: to walk away from the class to have an importance of children’s literature, educate us on what is appropriate for certain areas, to eventually use this knowledge to help a child with literature II. Broad definition of Children’s Literature- Anything that a child reads or is readto by someone else- doesn’t have to be age appropriate but has to be enjoyable a. Scholarly definition of Children’s Literature- the child needs to read something that is age appropriate (60,000 children’s book in print, and 5,000 are printed annually) b. Books come in all different formats c. Children’s books are usually bought by librarians d. Really good children’s literature is not dated- Written to be performed, read aloud - Children can study and discover their own plots and settings and meanings in their own imagination- If children are confused about pictures than there is something probably wrong with the pictures NOT the children- Cake in the picture indicates that Max will be ok and won’t get in trouble- Children can be active viewers in picture books (ties into emergent literacy behavior)- **Where The Wild Things Are (clip shown in class) III. Needs of Children: match a child with the appropriate item and our needs change as we grow, developmental needs a) The need for security: begins at time of birth (Max finds his security in the comfort of his room with a hot dinner)b) We all need to be loved c) We want to achieve and be competent in what we do (learning to walk, talk, crawl) – Hero Booksd) Escape- work hard and then you play, reward yourself (if you escape into literature than real life you will be more refreshed)e) Sign of intelligencef) Needs to be beauty in our lives- picture books provide visual beauty III. Books for the very young - Taking a single rhyme and transferring it a difficult culture- To Market, To Marketo Based on historical illustration about New Castle Delaware - The House That Jack Built- Mamá Goose: collection of Latino nursery rhymes and games- bilingualA. Mother Goose - There was always a question who was “The Mother Goose” - Lady of goose in the bonnet/apron: first associated with puppet plays in London in early 1700s B. Tommy Thumba. Lots of rhyme and rhyme b. Tell a story- clear beginning, middle and end to these stories c. A lot of stories ask for active participation d. Illustrations are there to enlarge the meaning of the text- placement is very important C. 1960s, full page illustrations, partial that go with a rhyme- resource bookD. Ring O’ Roses- Humorous, imaginative, period costumes, 1920s- Stands out because of pigsE. Here Comes Mother Goose- Kid friendly book- Authors: Authorizes and collectors of children’s literature, wrote oxford dictionary of children’s - Human characteristics for animalsF. Mother Goose- William Wegmans- Older kids get a kick out of the dogsG. Arnold’s Book H. William Wegman’s ABCIV. Song and Music in Children’s Literaturea) All around us in our environment b) It is important to introduce children to music for intellectual needc) Infants like the human voice, like toys that make noised) Toddlers respond to singing, they like to clap, swing and sway- enjoy repetition e) Pre-school like songs, active participation, playing the musical instruments o Rhythm band instrumentso Introduced to classical music o Used to quiet a child or energize a child  Ex. Hush Little Baby - Used to soothe and calm their child - Traditional folk art styleo A Hunting We Will Go- For older children- Song from 1600s- Cartoon, color consistent with calming, excitement and detail in the pictureso Old McDonald Had a Farm- Children love making sounds- older children can challenge themselves and have new vocabulary o Howdi Doo Wrote This Land is Our Lando Wheels on The Buso Adored by children and acted outV.Concept Books- intended for young childrena) Alphabet Books- ritualized dialogue: in an alphabet book or animals should be clearly represented on the page, should be on point with the age level, want to speak to the world of the child and connect with familiarity, they should avoid using animals that could be an Alligator or Crocodilea. Examples:- Letter: John Burningham: - Chicka Chicka Boom Boomo Popular bode color illustrationo Collage, cut paper - Alligators All Aroundo Criticized by native American culture - The Z Was Tappedo Too sophisticated to teach the alphabet o Older kids enjoyo Illustrative style is popular o Two time winner - Animalia - Young Joe- Objects to be counted must stand out clearly- It should be challenging for the appropriate ages - Number books can be categorized in three wayso One on one correspondenceo Complex mathematical puzzles- 10,50, 100- counting wildflowerso A story- a puzzle- “Mouse Count”  Uses collages, mouse  Children see themselves as small little mice (why they are commonly the characters in children’s books)- Zin!Zin!Zin! A Violin: meant to teach music groupings  Move from more familiar to more difficult Children’s as young as 15 months can grasp color- usually begins with red- Count with Maisy- Young children- Board booko Numbers- a little too busy, board book should be for a young childo Count And See Tena Hoban: brings photography to children as a wonderful resource for teaching concepts, one of the first to do this, she usesthe world around her to share her understandings of concepts Counting Wildflowers:  Moja Meams One- not a book intended to each counting- introducing people to East Africa- just familiar with another language- Freight Train Describes the different colors of the train Utilizes vocabulary to display placement- Brown, Bear, What do you see?  Predictable book- Lunch- her art is peace of paper from pulp herself- The Napping House- hierarchy - Changes, Changes Block people, solving problem - Eating Fractions Different concept, food and portions - I Touch These can reinforce the experience Not going to
