ENGL 2315 1ST Edition Lecture 5Outline of Last Lecture I. Groups met to consult about presentations and left early.Outline of Current Lecture II. Social InteractionalismIII. 5 Concepts: A. Meaning (Core of social interactionalism): “We act towards objects on the basis of meanings we assign them. (object – meaning – action) Based on mental justification (like past experiences) or has moral/legal precedence. Meaning constructs our social reality – a situation has real consequences.B. Language (Symbols): in itself many words we use don’t have one meaning. Meaningsarise through interaction, not inherent in objects, words. Meanings are subjective (based on experiences or common knowledge. Language is a symbol system so we can have different interpretatons.C. Thinking: Role/perspective talking. Unique to human beings. Gives the opportunity to put yourself in the position of someone else. Also called “Minding.”D. Self and Society: are the last two concepts. Self = I + Me. I is the doer of the action. Ex. “I picked up the book.” Me is the self viewed as an object. “Self” is found throughperspective – “looking-glass self.” The generalied other or “me”: multiple looking-glass selves= how people respond to us, and their reaction is considered before action is taken. Our composite responses or expectations we perceive from people who are important to us. IV. Application = NamingA.
