During hertime as a mid wife she would sit around and talk about the bible with the other women while waiting for the baby to be born. She was a threat to the Minister because it was looked down upon to be speaking about the bible and not be educated and or be a man. - As time goes on her bible group gets larger including both men and women - They arrest her and gives her a trial - She was charged with the fifth commandment (honor the father and mother)o Basically she was dishonoring the rules - She invokes a theological argument known as “works vs. grace”, “Arminian v. Antinomian” - Works (interpreted as law) says that there are things that you can do that lead to a kind of authenticity - Her argument was that they were not pure enough because they were to rapped up in the law - They banish her to road island where she meets Roger Williams Roger Williams- He uses an analogy from John Winthrow- Ships include a lot of diversity. There are two types of authority i. the captain ii. - I.E. religion is in the private sphere not the public one - Williams is Banished because of this dissents o He translates the bible to native lang. and begins to build relationships with them Second Generation of PuritansEvidence of the broken covenant: King Philips War There was a narrative of decline.
