Differences between other psychology Current LectureWhat is social psychology: it is a science, in which other’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors by others (family, friends, and strangers). Social influence is a plays a major part in social psychology. This includes our thoughts and feelings and our overt acts. Social Psychologistare interested what happens to an individual’s mind when influences conflict with each other. - The goal of social psychologist is to identify universals properties of human nature that make everyone susceptible to social influence, regardless of social class or culture. Prediction vs. Explanation: Social Psychologist aim to predict rather than explain, meaning they want to predict what will happen before it happens. Behavior is biologically based: Sociologists are not interested in individual traits, but how they interact in different situations. Individual differences- the aspects of people’s personalities that make them different from others. Social psychologist believe that explaining behavior primarily through personality factors ignores that the powerful role played by social influence. - Example: to understand why people intentionally hurt others, social psychologist focuses on the psychological processes that trigger aggression in specific situations. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. These terms are examples of how our behavior is shaped by our thoughts and behavior that can be involuntary. - The high sight bias: people exaggerate how much they could have predicted an outcome after knowing that it occurred. Ex: Presidential elections- The availability heuristic: a mental rule of thumb whereby people base a judgment on the ease with which they can bring something to mind.o The problem is that sometimes it is easiest to remember is not typical of the situations, which leads to faulty conclusions. - Implicit attitudes: they are involuntary, uncontrollable and unconscious- Explicit attitudes: they are consciously endorsed and easily reported Differences between other Psychologies- Personality : they study the characteristics that make individuals different from one another- Sociology: study groups or societies rather than individuals.
