Lecture 1 Major Course Themes I. Personality: collection of tendencies/traits that have dynamic effects with situations, other parts of personality and time a. Unitary thing AND Collection of traits i. Change overtime ii. More important than anything else II. Through research we’re able to understand important parts and processes of personality a. Even with research —> still inconclusive III. Models help us to understand the (1) Parts of personality and (2) How the parts relate to one another and to behavior a. Example: “Big Five” Model IV. High and Low values on personality are not inherently positive or negative a. Value depends on the fit between personality traits and situation at hand b. Inherently social i. socially constructed—> society has determined which aspects of personality are positive and which are negative V. Personality has Real Meaning! a.
