Accepted medical use, abuse potential  Abuse potential-2o V. accepted medical use, abuse potential Abuse potential-1- Drug taking behaviorso Regardless of whether drug is licit or illicit, three types of drug taking behaviors are distinguished: Drug use Drug misuse Drug abuse- Drug Useo Taking a drug properly and in its correct dosage without giving rise to health or behavioral problems that might harm the users themselves or anyone else- Drug Misuse/Abuseo Occur when drug is accompanied by health and behavioral problems that might harm the users themselves or anyone elseo Dependent on the extent to which physical, psychological and/or social impairment- Drug misuseo Involves inappropriate use of prescription or non-prescription drug- Drug abuseo Intentional improper use of a drug to alter perception or thought processo Results in development of psychological or physiological dependenceo Addiction to any drug, illicit or licit is drug abuseo Repeated use of drug may result in chronic toxicities which are specific to a particular drug- Drug dependencies o Drug abuse is often characterized by the development of drug dependencies as a result of repetitive use of psychoactive drugs because of their positive reinforcingeffects in the CNSo There are 2 types of drug dependencies Psychological (psychic) Physiological (physical)- Psychological Dependence o Drug abusers have a great subjective need or compulsion to obtain and use the drugo Abuser will take drug periodically without development of tolerance- Physiological dependence o Body needs the drug for normal physiological function o Increased dose of drug are required due to the development of tolerance o In absence of drug, withdrawal or abstinence syndrome is seen- Drug addiction o Psychoactive drugs with abuse potential have tendency to induce compulsive drug seeking behavior o Persistent drug seeking behavior of dependent individuals is maintained by the reinforcing properties of the drug. This activity continues despite its negative social, psychological and physical consequences.o Preoccupation with obtaining and using the drug may be so demanding as to decrease the users productivity o There is a high tendency to relapse in drug
