Changing of International SystemCHAPTER ONE READING NOTES- 1900s world found themselves absorbed in world economy - Everything changed after 1492, where wave of explorers, traders, and conquerors went forth from Europe expansion - Europeans used their military powers to expand- They wanted to expand and strengthen military powers keep across to market & resources on other points of world- Mercantilism: military power doctrine & power influence economicallyapplies colonial 16th-18th centuries controlled trade and monopolies- Peace of Westphalia: settlement that ended 30 yrs. war in 1648-modern state system- Sovereignty: expectation that states have legal and political supremacy (ultimate authority) within territorial boundaries- Hegemony: the predominance of one nation-state over others- 1815-1914-Hundred Years War- Pax Britannica: British Peace, century long period beg with Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo in 1815 and ending with the outbreak ofWWI in 1914 which Britain contributed to econ openness & peace- Free trade encouraged by advances in transportation and communication- Gold standard: Monetary system that prevailed between 1870 and 1914 where countries tied their currencies to gold at legally fixed price- Great Britain started Gold Standard the everyone wanted to use it- 1870s most of industrial world used mon gold standard- Facilitated trading, investment, and immigration grew- Entered globalization- Major powers Japan, US, and China- Collapse of 30 yrs crisis led to melting, diplomatic, and political fronts conflicts- Germany power grew in 1900 population & economy grew- WWI did little to resolve European tensions- Caused hyperinflation- Treaty of Versailles: peace treaty between the allies and Germany that formally ended WWI on June 28, 1919. Woodrow Wilson - U.S became world’s biggest debtor of wars to wars biggest lender- League of Nations: permanent international security organization formed in the aftermath of WWI which was supported by the UN after WWII
