Racial terminology ii. Linguistic construction of racial identities- Ebonics, vernacular, dialect II. RACE Texta. Arguments of the Book (RACE) 1. Idea of race was invented in the last 400 years -Before the 1600’s, no one was classified by race, instead, groups were classified based on religion. 2. Human biological variation is real, obvious, wonderful, and necessary -There is obviously a difference, but it is necessary for humans to survive thoughevolution. 3. The Idea of race does not explain human variation- There was no access to genetics when the idea of race came about, instead it derived from an economic motivation with colonists looking for cheap labor. 4. Race is both stable and subject to change- It is a flexible idea. There will always be the concept of race, but the interpretation changes throughout time. 5. We own the future of race -Since it was invented and not based on scientific fact, then we can change itIII. Race Symbolsa. Symbols of Racea. Skin, hair, facial/body features, clothing, food, gestures, musical preference, etc.b. Race is a social/historical/cultural constructa. It is “a system of ideas, identities, natural relations that emerged slowly in the context of western European imperialism and colonial expansion beginning in the15th century. c. Ethnocentric- oneself is culturally superior to othersa. It is different from racism because race judges simply on physical traits. With racism, there is no potential for them to be as good as you, as there is with a culture
