9.11.13 Kin 110 lecture notes- Announcements:o Kin club a week from todayo Barry won’t be here on Friday  o We are doing a video/slides – can view wherever - Diet?o Habitual pattern of eatingo Doesn’t have to do with weight losso Many ways people try to get you to change your diet- Weight loss?- Diet actually refers to what you eat over a course of days, weeks, months…o Mixed diet Eat almost anything  Clearly not spoiled and rotteno Vegan – no butter no milk (nothing from animal)o No carb Popular for several years… Not good- Habitual pattern of eatingo Doesn’t mean you have to eat the same thing everyday.o “Average”; days you eat well, days you eat poorlyo OCD/Body builders – same thingo Mypyramid.gov New pyramid has vertical bars – each corresponds to a different food group. Has a person going up the stairs(exercise is important in health) Old pyramid – horizontally stacked Newest pyramid- Plate with fruits, grains, vegetables, protein, dairy- Dairy farmers don’t like it – its not on the plate- Choosemyplate.gov- Lots of politics in these visuals…o Dairy counsel…o Push for people who produce beef, milk, etc. (not necessarily about health)o Thesnackneutralizer.com- Overeat, hardly eat, eat nothing but oreos, feel guilty and eat nothing but veggies- How many days to get an accurate picture of habitual diet?o 7 days (consecutive), 30 days, 6 monthso non-consecutiveo it would take a while… weekends vs. weekdays seasonal eating eating while at school finals week- Registered dieticians collect between 3-7 days (two weekdays, and a weekend day)o Why 3 days?o Need to record every single thing they ate…o Break down “jambalaya”- Mealsnap.como Take picture of what you are going to eat- Colleting diet info is an inexact science (WHY?)o People change behavioro People always report less than what they actually ateo Some over-report: people with anorexiao Many people believe data are fundamentally flawed Better way of doing this- Accurate assessment of diet is critical because diet  athletic performance and health- Is high intake of fat related to risk for getting heart disease?o 1. Identify who gets heart diseaseo 2. Accurately assessment fat intakeo 3. Compare fat intake to rate of heart disease- number of people who get heart disease increases as amount of fat in diet increaseso more fat - greater risk of heart diseaseo disclosure: graph is made up- Say we can accurately measure rate of heart disease and fat in people’s diet?o Are other factors not being considered? *gender age ethnicity other risky behavior (drugs, smoking)o consider all the other factors? Epigenetics In utero – what your mother did when she was pregnant with you, change epigenetics – change risk of different diseases- Does a positive relationship beween two things prove that one causes the other?o Correlation is not always causation- Distance from the earth to Saturn, perfect correlation to the price of gasoline…o No relationship…o Stress causes heart disease? Not the fat?- Difficult to design studies to get definitive data.o Sharper picture of diet and health by creating an experiment- Healthy group of people – change the fat in their dieto Some 10%, 20%, 30%... Look at who gets heart disease Whats the problem with this Unethical…? We don’t know if eating more or less fat causes heart disease sowe don’t know if that’s going to happen No one wants to dedicate their whole life to this studyo Provide all food, and control that affect risk for disease Exercise, tv, work, etc.o Cost a lot of money, take forever, almost impossible to do!- How do you design a study that answers an important question takes a reasonable about of time and cost a reasonable amount of money?o Test animals Problem: not completely accurate (rats aren’t
