9.4.13 Kin 110 lecture notes- Tour de France, pro cyclists average 5 h/dayo In hot weather, steep mountains for 23 dayso Requires a lot of energy 5000 calories (doesn’t include regular calories you need to eat – about 2000/2500 per day) 7500 total calories! Need to eat calorie dense/nutritious food- 1st challenge: 7500 kcal = 27 Pop-tarts, 75 slices of Bread, 30 powerbars or 150 oreoso a LOT of food- issue isn’t just calories: environment changeso cold to hot quicklyo mountains have elevations in meters, sea level to 165 kilometers in a day high altitude causes loss of oxygen they need minerals, vitamins, fluids, electrolytes type of & number of kcals matters carbs, protein, fat… ratio matters a lot ^- Also…o Need fluids to maintain chemical composition of bloodo Electrolytes: sodium & potassium & chloride (coconut water!)o Balancing is important if you don’t want to make yourself sicko This is why sport nutrition is such a big industry!- Other sports events…o Running, field hockey, military (physical activity, extreme conditions, limited sleep, high level for long period of time), quidditch lol- Other techniques besides foodo Dietary supplements Enhance performanceo Drugs Increases more & more Designed to manipulate the body, environment… Enhance performanceo For 99.9% of world not elite athletes, optimize their health? Life performance matters as wello Medical – IV, can get nutrition while sleeping- Nutrition/physical activity for human performance, meaning athletic performance but overall health also we will focus on both issueso Priorities: what is the nutritional strategy? End of the season? New goals after not practicing the same routine of exercise- Gen.ed class with a BS designation.
