A Matter of Time*proximate causes = phenomena occurring close in time to the event that it produced/contributed to*remote causes = phenomena removed in time to the effects that they produce/contribute to- Our historical memories differ, meaning out perceptions changed based on our own personal history. Outside of the US, where histories proceed 200 years, perceptions are different due to timing.II. Case Study – IRAN- Coup of 1935, perceptions altered interactions between the United States, Britain and Iran due to politics regarding oil, communism and the Cold War.- Let’s analyze this from each of the three levels of analysis.. Systemic: fear of spreading communism State: economic advances in the oil industry, WWII debt Individual: Eisenhower had strong opinions on the spreading of communism- How does image theory play into this? Iran viewed Britain as a domineering enemy, while Britain viewed Iran as a property. Iran first viewed the US in a neutral, but respected way, switching to viewing them as “the great satan”.III. Important Aspects of World Politics Today- Global political system- WW1 and WW2- Cold War- Sept. 11- States in the International system- Anarchy in the international system- Cycles of World
