How Media Dictates Our Learning Current LectureChapter 1 Notes Media & Society pp. 13-30Media are a social issue. They have the power to shape society through culture (our lives as southerners, for example), individual behaviors, values & norms, and institutional relations and outcomes. Examples: 1) Sex and Violence on TV. Does it influence our behavior? Is our culture more course? 2) News Bias. How does it shape us as a society? 3) Turn private into public. With reality TV, these two realms are no longer separate. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Socialization: the process of learning and internalizing values, beliefs, and norms of our culture (pg. 13).Which in turn, shapes our identity, sense of self, and our sense of community/nation.Institutions Involved in Socialization6 Family6 Churches6 Schools6 Government6 MediaRituals of Socialization- Family - Thanksgiving; Weddings; —> these traditions teach us that holidays are sacred and family involved, an intro to different cultures, and the tradition of a woman publicly giving herself to a man.- Church - Lent; Christmas —> teaches us the significance and the holiness of Christmas and sacrifice.- Government - 4th of July; State Funerals; Inauguration- Media - Super bowl (the value of sports in throughout the world); 9/11; etc. Rituals tell us messages about what we value as a society. “Traditions”. Routine Behaviors of Socialization Media- Advertising: teaches us what’s cool. Consumerism- Social Conflict: War and violence- Ideology: this describes how media may or may not teach us to fear other nations/cultures or how media may make us feel connected to other nations or cultures. Nationalism or Xenophobia.- Representations: How does media represent minorities and what is “normal”?Example - Sesame Street. It teaches us as children to share, do right, have manners, etc.Media Affect How We Learn- Media Biases (like television over print for example). Our learning can be affected by the mode of delivery. - Media dictates what counts as truth or evidence- What is meaningful and meaninglessMedia Mediates Our Relationships with:- Government - We wouldn’t know what was going on with our government if it wasn’t forthe media. - Minority groups - unless you are a part of that particular minority group, it is through themedia we learn about what is going on with different groups of people.- Different Social Classes- Religion- Other nations and culturesMedia Industry Relationships- Put out certain messages, not others- Cultivate or cater to certain audiences, not others. For example, advertisers target our generation as millennials.- Develop/employ certain technologies, not others.- Maintain certain types of relationships to institutions (like government, churches, etc.) and not others. Why?- Money (profit; efficiencies) - does this story make a profit?- Morals/Ethics (professional norms) - It is a tough decision to decide as a media professional whether to not to show the chemically burned babies in Syria on national television.- Personnel (who are they) - why people claim for diversity in this industry! To reach out to difference audiences and relate to them. - Regulations – The government regulates how media is
