Norton Anthology of American Literature Vols C D and E 8th ed Bring this with you every day Other requirements UA email acct flash drive folder notebook GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION AND POLICIES Course Description EN 210 is intended to present a historical overview of the American literary tradition from 1865 to the present Prerequisites EN 101 and 102 or 103 104 with grade of C or higher Student Learning Outcomes EN210 Students can produce a literary close reading that addresses both the form and the content of one or more text s in the construction of an argument about the text s meaning Students attain a broad knowledge of American literary history of the late 19th century Modernism The Harlem Renaissance and literature after 1945 Students gain the confidence and ability to speak in a sophisticated and critical fashion about later American literature Students will develop effective written communication skills Students will recognize and identify key concepts in the arts sciences and humanities to provide a broad perspective on the human condition Attendance Policy 1 Successful students attend class regularly and are not tardy for class 2 Major graded work such as tests or papers missed due to legitimate circumstances beyond the student s control may be made up if 1 arrangements are made with the instructor in advance or in a timely fashion upon the student s return to class 3 The lectures class discussion group work and other daily exercises in a writing class cannot be reconstructed for a student who has been absent therefore daily work missed due to tardiness or an absence for any reason cannot be made up More about attendance Class participation is an important factor in your success in this class Additionally tests and quizzes may draw from class discussions and lecture notes If you miss class you severely jeopardize your grade When and if you do miss class it is your responsibility to check the calendar of assignments and or check with a classmate to find out what s due Course work and time commitment This will be a discussion oriented class Come to every class prepared to demonstrate that you have read and thought about the material and to contribute meaningful questions and observations Your participation is essential to your success in this course keep up with the reading discuss and ask questions about the reading and be mindful and attentive in class take notes both on reading assignments and class discussion and lecture Reading and writing can be time consuming please manage yours accordingly Class conduct Please use your manners and be respectful Be alert attentive and engage with the class and material Be mindful of the diversity of students in the class and choose your words with the appropriate care and attention to audience Think carefully about the language you use and the opinions you express When you contribute to class discussion please be mindful of others do not make comments that may be perceived as offensive in terms of race gender sexual orientation religion ethnicity nationality or disability Any form of harassment disrespect or abuse will not be tolerated Students who engage in disruptive behavior will be dismissed from class and subject to disciplinary sanctions outlined by the Code of Student Conduct In short please help make our classroom a safe environment that is comfortable and conducive to learning for everyone If you have a concern about anything that happens in class please discuss it with me Cell phone policy Cell phone use is disruptive to the class and will not be tolerated If you are reading texts sending texts checking facebook and or if your phone makes any sort of noise etc I will ask you to stop After this first occasion you will receive a 0 for the day for each instance of in class phone use Depending on the severity of the disruption you may be dismissed from the class Note if you need to know what time it is please wear a watch or ask me If there is an emergency situation in which you need to be reachable in class please let me know 2 Other technologies Laptop e reader or other technology use is permissible in class only with written documentation from the office for students with disabilities that such accommodations are necessary Recent studies Mueller Oppenheimer 2014 indicate that old fashioned pencil and paper note taking is more effective than typing when it comes to note taking reading comprehension and memory Furthermore it has been found that simply being in the vicinity of an electronic screen for example sitting next to someone in class who is using a laptop or smartphone poses a distraction meanignful enough to result in lower test scores Sana Weston Cepeda 2013 Cancelled class late instructor If I have to cancel class I will do my best to let you know most likely via email If I am late and there is no notice on the door please wait ten minutes after which you may assume class is cancelled due to emergency Email Please always include a subject heading in your email and respectfully address your message Email is the best way to contact me and I will try to respond quickly However I am not on call If you write with a question about an assignment an hour before it s due you might not get a response In addition please use your discretion and common sense when emailing for instance is the question you re emailing answered here on the syllabus or in the reading you were supposed to do I may occasionally send announcements syllabus adjustments etc via UA email Please check your email regularly Blackboard learn The Blackboard page for this course can be accessed through the student tab of mybama ua edu Assignment sheets handouts important links and the syllabus will all be posted there The major essay assignment submission will be through eLearning Please note that technical issues are NOT an excuse for late or missing assignments Plan to turn in all work ahead of time in case of any unexpected technical issues and remember to always back up your work You are expected to have sufficient computer knowledge to succeed in this course eLearning tutorials are available at www
