Linguistic Anthropology Current LectureI. What is Anthropology?Anthropology comes from the Greek word "Anthropose" which means "people". In combination with the word "Logos" meaning "the study of", the literal translation of the word "Anthropology" is "the study of people". In other words, Anthropology is the study of what it means to be human. Anthropology - "the field of inquiry that studies human culture and evolutionary aspects of human biology."The study of mankind incorporates many other fields of study including sociology, economics, history, biology, psychology. II. Introduction to the Major Subfields of AnthropologyA. Cultural AnthropologyCulture is defined as "learned, shared ideas". Culture is responsible for shaping most human behaviors, perceptions, values, and reactions. It shapes perceptions of the environment and world views in ways that distinguish societies from each other. The purpose of Cultural Anthropology is to know about peoples. Cultural Anthropologists' method of studying peoples is delving into the culture being studied, orfieldwork. Medical Anthropology, which explores the relationship between culture, health,and disease, and Urban Anthropology, which deals with issues of inner cities, are two areas of expertise for Cultural Anthropologists. Linguistic Anthropology Linguistic Anthropology is the study of the origin of language and speech. The use of language (i.e. words, slang, dialect, regional variation) is a unique characteristic ofhumans. For example, peoples living in a region which experiences heavy snowfalls have many different variations of the word "snow" where other regions that do not experience heavy snowfall do not. As another example, there are very many different variations of the word "money" in the United States, as it is an important part of our culture. C. Archeology The goal of Archaeologists is to reconstruct the past. Those who work in this field of study seek to gain information from and interpret the significance of material culture, or artifacts left behind. Artifacts is defined as "anything used or modified by humans or hominids". Artifacts are recovered during excavations. There are two major subfields of Archaeology: Historic (e.g. ceramics) and Prehistoric (e.g.
