AMST-A100 1st Edition Lecture 27 Outline of Last Lecture I. Review: The exotic, the erotic, and inequalityII. Scenes and questions from Heading SouthIII. Discussion of themes in “Romance Tourism” and Heading SouthOutline of Current Lecture I. How Stella Got Her Groove Backa. Overlapping themesb. Gender, Class, Racec. Ambivalence II. Questions For Final ExamCurrent LectureHow Stella Got Her Groove Back- The main themes in the novel overlap with those in Heading South and “Romance Tourism”o Transnational perspective of American studieso Race, gender, and classo Nation- What do these three examples of transnational tourism have to tell us about race, gender, and class?o Race: continuity between what is going on with sex tourism and what was going on in the colonial period. Dark skinned provided sex for light skinned foreigners. o How Stella Got Her Groove Back complicates this idea because she is a black woman rather than white.o Outside of the US, race is understood in a very different wayo African American’s visiting (for example) Ghana would be associated with white foreigners by the locals. Put in the same category as whites. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o This suggests that whiteness is not fundamentally about race. It is about a certainkind of power. o Gender: What’s happening with race is also happening with gender. In all of these stories, women are going into other foreign countries to have “flings”.o Gender roles are somewhat flipped. For example, a man that is dependent on a foreign woman is not considered less manly. In fact, often times they are praised for profiting from a relationship with an American woman. o Class: Women are occupying the same position as men occupy in the social hierarchy. o For example, Stella is a black upper -middle class professional woman. She is an important example of a new social identity. That very class position helps us understand how Stella is able to go to Jamaica and have a relationship with a man half her age. It’s all about power.- Sex tourism, zombie movies, and ambivalence o The idea of the zombie came out of Haiti o The US has an ambivalent view/ image of the Caribbean Jamaica you cant do anything right VS Jamaica will you help me get my groove back Love/Hate attitudeo Haitian scorers (often black) forcing white women to perform his “every desire”o Black men in the Caribbean are considered savageso However, there are black male protagonists in recent films where there is a “black savior” figure. Ex) I Am Legend, Will Smitho The black man is either a Demon/ Sorcerer or the Super Human Savioro In How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Winston and Legba save these white women from a soulless/ meaningless existence- Questions about Stella to think about for Final Examo Describe Stella and Winston. In what ways are their lives - and life chances, including mobility - different? o What is Stella's "groove" about, how did she lose it, and how does she try to get it back? What does Stella see as lacking in her life in the U.S.?o Why Jamaica? What fantasies about Jamaica and the people who live there are invoked in the novel?o In what ways does race show up as an issue in the
