Discussion 357 18 Feb Audio Recording wma Audio recording started 11 08 AM Tuesday February 18 2014 Tuesday February 18 2014 11 08 AM Parents Today 1 2 3 4 5 6 Expert opinions conflict Parents care where the kids go to school Spanking versus not spanking What to eat feed your kids Vaccinate vs not vaccinate Parent authority are question more today than what it use to be 7 Parents have to take care of their own parents more often longevity of age 8 More different family forms a Biological parent family b Step arent families c 2 different parents d Adopted families e Varieties Images of Moms and Dads 1 General differences a Moms TEND to be the nurturing one dad the authoritative figure b Dads tend to come and go out of the house more freely than moms do c Dads will go out more i Dads tend to be the provider b Mom has more experience taking and nurturing to take care of kids i Society also allows this Mom having to go home to take care of kid ii Dad tends to be frowned on when this happens 2 Moms a Overall tend to be more confident in their child taking skills b Also less negative about the negative aspect of parenting than dads are c FUN Mom i Mom tends to become more of a friend ii Mom lets you party etc the house everyone wants to go over during hs b INVOLVED MOM i Major involvement is kids not focused as much on their own career b TRADITIONAL MOM i Having a nice home keeping a nice schedule effective disciplinarian providing religious training b Protective MOM i Protects from emotional physical harm ii Puts child s needs first before their own b KNOWLEDGABLE MOM i Reads every book on motherhood knows expert opinions ii Always trying to push the curve with 3 Dads a Disciplinarian Dad i The wait until your dad gets home dad ii Military type dad iii Keeps order b Peter Pan Dad i Phil from Modern Family ii Always wants to have fun with kids c Traditional dad i Bring home the bacon dad ii Less involved then mom always working iii Still involved with the kids 1 Happy hour than go and coach d CAD DAD i Wild and crazy dad ii Has own life iii Focused on own accomplishments than own family iv Extra marital affairs sports car stereotype e DISTANT DAD i More physically distant dad ii Comes home says hi that s it Importance of Responsiveness 1 Infat attachment and importance of attachment a Responsive parents really influence infant development into childhood i Maternal vocalization 1 Mom making little noises to the baby cooing awwing etc a Linked to children s intelligence 9 12 years later ii ii More responsive moms 1 The more attached the kids were with relationships Less responsive 1 Behavior issues ii ii Responsive moms 1 Kids are more socially competent 9 12 years later Touch 1 Pre me babies are in centers where the prents can touch them Infant Characteristics 1 Preterm Infants a Communicate and behave differently than full term infants b More fussy c Less attentive to their moms voice d Less likely to vocalize e Less likely to smile f Usually have moms that hold them more and try t do more to stimulate them g The preterm infant is less responsive so the mom is trying to get the baby to be more so so it is actually naturally catching up the preterm infant up to full term 2 Developmentally delayed infants a Natural training program with caretaker i The mom gives more directives b Use more words that are controlling c Physical or non verbal controlling directives i The LOOK you get from mom ii Pointing 1 2 3 sec rules iii Taking their hand and taking hem over to pick up their toys Parenting Characteristics 1 Mothers VS Fathers a Moms more nurturing dad more playmates b Moms with infants tend to do more stimulating c Moms adjust vocalization to the child s more d Moms have better attention and knowledge of the child cues than dad 2 Adolescent parents a Not as responsible as adult parents b Stupid just plain stupid lol jk 3 Depressed mothers a Less responsive to infants b Kids will become depressed c Kids can develop attachment anxiety later on 15 years
