Election of 1960Current Lecturel. In 1949 the Soviets successfully tested the A-bomb within 4 years of America’s. Since they were able to do this so fast people pointed to spy rings, accused spies would be tried and executed.ll.China was invaded by the Japanese during WWll. If there’s any resistance from a village the Japanese would poison the water supply and the villagers would die. The Chinese nationalist and communist armies fought against the Japanese but after the war they turned on each other. The communists win because the nationalists didn’t give the people land reforms. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.lll.America established the republic of Germany and made Berlin the capitol. We also form NATO which includes British, French, etc., and the Soviets form the Warsaw Pact with other communist nations.lV.In 1950 McCarthy gets persuaded to talk anti-communist and he claims to have 50-100 names of communist people in the government. A. McCarthy’s convictions yielded no results and when he starts going after one of Eisenhower’s friends Eisenhower sensors McCarthy, which is one step away from impeachment. V.After WWll Korea was split down the 38th parallel. North Korea which is communist attacked South Korea. The U.N. fights back and consolidates control of the South. This war becomes a war of attrition and it is the bloodiest war.A. In 1953 Eisenhower makes a truce through the U.N. with Korea. He makes the 38th parallel the line between North and South Korea. WE get out of Korea and when we do this it reduces tensions. Vl.A French Company built the Suez Canal, but the British owned most of the shares and the French and Egyptian own some. The leader of Egypt wants to build a hydroelectric dam. However the U.N. had two major objections to this because silt is needed for Egyptian farmers and if they build the canal it won’t reach the farmland. There are also forts along this river and they would be destroyed if this dam was built. The leader of Egypt wants to build it anyway so the British, French, and Israelis bomb Egypt. President Eisenhower tells them to stop and they do because he didn’t want Egypt to turn to the Soviets for help.Vll.The Soviets launch Sputnik which makes them the first to launch into outer space. This makes the U.S. work faster to catch up.Vlll.In 1960, Eisenhower’s last year in office he has a summit meeting with the Soviets. America had U-2 spies look at Russia, the pilot on the last U-2 mission, Gary Powers, was captured by the Soviets. Russia asked why we had sent U-2 spies and President Eisenhower denied it. At the summit meeting the Soviets want Eisenhower to promise that he won’t send spy planes over Russia anymore, and Eisenhower says he can promise that himself but he can’t make future presidents promise this and the Soviets walk out.lX.With the election of 1960 Kennedy is president and tensions between the Soviets increase
