Discussion of themes in “Romance Tourism” and Heading South Current Lecture Review: The exotic, the erotic, and inequality  In all of the examples we’re looking at in this last unit we hear about the distinction between the cold/rational/artificial global north (US and Canada) and the warm/passionate/natural south (Caribbean)  In the end these are cultural stereotypes: o They run more or less parallel to the distinction between industrialized and non industrialized societies, and so these stereotypes reflect economic and political inequalities o The warm/passionate/natural stereotype suggests childlike qualities, or in any case a lack of impulse control. This stereotype is invoked as a justification for why residents of the Caribbean need to be subject to intervention and discipline o This same stereotype also suggests that the Caribbean is a kind of playground (tourism industry).
