HIST 106 1st Edition Lecture 23 Outline of Last Lecture I Things going on during Vietnam War Outline of Current Lecture I II III IV Richard Nixon Jerald Ford Jimmy Carter Ronald Reagan Current Lecture Final exam not cumulative The Sixties Bush s War is not required to be read Vietnam War HAWKS People who wanted to continue the war DOVES People who wanted to end the war 58 000 men died Richard Nixon When he takes office he walks into a buzz saw o Inflation is going up o OPEC cuts off oil to US Nixon responds by creating The 55 speed limit Turn right on red Expansion of 7 11 s Watergate Scandal His major success was opening up China o Ping Pong Diplomacy Became President based on the plan that he would end the war but ends up expanding the war These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute The War Comes to A Close In 1973 a Peace Agreement takes place in Paris to try to agree how to end the war o It was decided whether or not the Viet cong should have their position In 1974 the North Vietnamese offer us the terms that they would end the war and return our prisoners if we withdrew our troops from Vietnam o They also agreed to stay in North Vietnam o We took the offer By 1975 they took over South Vietnam The public was not happy with the government was indicated because less than 53 of the public were voting What was America s interest in the war Why did we stay in so long 1 We were convinced in the Domino Effect 2 No President wanted to have a losing war on their record pride issue 3 We didn t want the Russians to think that we were weak 4 Help the country understand democracy 5 We are trying to keep the French in line 6 Businesses are making a lot of money because of the war From the very beginning the Secretary of War realized this was not a winnable war Jerald Ford President from 1974 1976 Economy is in shambles Tries to stabilize the economy Tries cutting spending didn t work Tries to poor money into the system Mayaguez was seized by Cambodians killed several Jimmy Carter Democrat from the South Was an engineer of the Navy Offered us a new view He brought morality to government o He said he s a born again Christian 1979 Iran is going through a revolution o 1st thing they did was rush the American Embassy and captured the American diplomats o They held 53 hostages We are getting close to war with Iran o Bomb Iran song Iran s allow captives to leave and we back off Ronald Reagan President from 1980 1988 The election was close between Carter and Reagan He is going to re establish the rights He was entertaining Rise of the Conservatives o People turn to conservatism o People are moving from cities to suburbs o Country is moving in the right wing direction Rival of Religion o Evangelical Christianity Every President has to say they are a born again Christian o Un Orthodox Faiths He pulled together the Conservative Movement by pulling together the Fiscals Libertarians with the Social and the Hawks The economy gets even worse o Emphasis on money o Movies start getting rated based on how much money it makes Return to old American values The downside he swept away all restrictions o No restriction on EPA banks ect Caused problems in 2008 o Aids was starting to appear and he never spoke about it George Bush Democrat Elected in 1988
