Things going on During Vietnam WarCurrent Lecture- Battle of Dien Bien Phuo We wanted the French to join NATO- The NVA had a lot of equipment b/c it was a very short distance between the manufactures and the battlefieldo We had to take our weapons from the US all the way to Vietnam- Things going on during the same decade as the Vietnam war:o Counterculture: large number of reactions to the Vietnam waro Civil Rightso Politics- Politicso Johnson is President until 1968 The Great Society: declares war on poverty Creates Office of Economic Opportunity Passes Medicare and medicate Passed Department of Housing and Human Development Opens immigration which had been close since 1924 Appoints 4 liberal judges to the supreme court- Miranda v. Arizona: entitles you to certain rights He starts pouring money in at the bottom and national income start to riseo Liberation Movement Free Speech Movement Women’s Liberation ERA: Equal Rights Amendment Phyllis Schlafly: fought against the ERA saying it was an assault on God and Texasvalues- ERA was shot down Latino LiberationThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. The Straights Hippies v. non hippieso They experimentedo Slogans: “I’m a human being, do not fold, spindle or mutilate me”o Movies: Strawberry Statement, Easy Rider, The Graduate, Masho Music: Satisfaction & Mothers Little Helper by the Stoneso People went from Jesus to Astrology o Students were leading the campaigno Most popular book about how students are being misused: “The Student as Nigger”- Lyndon Johnson steps down in 1968- We tried everything to stop the waro Rolling Thunder: keep bombing the North until they give upo bath bombs- Richard Nixon steps upo He is not worried about anything but winningo The economy starts to go downhillo Inflation is still going up very fasto Nixon responds by Increasing the interest rates Pouring money into the topo He imposes Wage and Price Control He sets limits on wage and prices People are upseto 1970-1973 HOPEC shut of oil to the USo Gas prices start to sour People are stealing gas from people’s cars People aren’t able to purchase as much which means factories are starting to produce less which leads to unemploymento Russians ruin their wheat crop and appeals to the US, Nixon sells them all of our wheat US has a shortage of wheat and everything that’s made from wheat Price goes upo Hated Anti-War resistors, Hated Youth Movemento He had the opportunity to replace 4 justices on the Supreme Courto Tries to undercut the Democratic Party by breaking into Democratic headquarters (Watergate) to plant a bug and go through files, they were caught.o Vice President of the US Spiro Agnew is caught taking a bribe in the White House and is forced to resigno Nixon is forced to turn in a video tape proving that it was his idea to break into Democratic Headquarters- Gerald Ford becomes President in 1974o 1st thing he did was pardon Mr.
