Guest Speaker: Dr. OlsenCurrent LectureCIA Agent: Dr. Olsen- The Cold Waro It was actually two wars Above the line- Was rhetoric, the arms race, circuit wars, propaganda, diplomacy Below the line- Was espionage, sabotage, and invisible - Was fierce, brutal, ruthless, and was fight to the death b/w to large and intelligent soviet services- Olsen is a veteran of this war- It was an epic confrontation b/t US and Soviet Union- Capitalism vs. Communism, Democracy vs. Dictatorship, God vs. Godlessness- The US must have the very best intelligenceo To get intelligence, you need spies- He and his wife were undercovero Needed to be undercover for effectiveness and safety- Was born and raised in Iowa - Attended the University of Iowa and had a Mathematics/Economics major- The US navy was waiting for him when he graduated- While in Law School, he got invited by the CIA to go to Washington for questions and test as a part of the process- Had 2 years of training before overseas assignmento Takes place in a place in Virginia called “The Farm”These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. They had forged passports, license plates, ect. to go with the different identities - They hid spy gear in furniture that looked like regular furniture- It was illegal to spy in France- When they told their children that they were spies, the children were older (college-aged)- Some CIA kids felt betrayed that their parents lied to them- In Viennao Some terrorists sent a death threat to Olsen and his wifeo They stayed in Vienna and were able to finish the assignment- In Moscow during the Cold Waro Olsen was undercover as a secretary of the US embassyo Was also working inside the CIA station inside the embassyo A Russian note came to them saying “ I am a major in the KGB, and I want to volunteer my services to the CIA”, it also mentioned a meeting time They were 80% sure that it was a trap but they decided to go anyway, it was a potential intelligence gain Olsen was chosen to go b/c he was good at speaking Russian The man wanted the CIA to exfiltrate him and his family The man gave him a shoe box of photographs of KGB cryptographic material When he got to him apartment he got the beating of his life The Russian man turned out to be a very valuable intelligence
