Investigation A Pendulums Elisabeth Qualls Samantha Peeler 02 10 2025 Abstract In this experiment we are determining whether or not the oscillation time of a pendulum Based on the pre lab reading a pendulum is a contraption that consists of a mass tied to changes depending on the angle of the swing Introduction the end of a string that is free swinging about a certain angle The use of pendulums is worldwide and the idea of pendulums isochronous timing was proposed in Italy in the 1600s Isochronous timing is the idea that no matter the angle of the pendulum s swing the period of its oscillations are always going to be the same This property and theory was something that we were aiming to prove or disprove in our experiment Method Experimental Apparatus For our experiment we set our pendulum up on our lab table so it was easier to start our time trials Each time we started a trial we used a protractor to measure out the precise angle that we needed One partner held the weight at the needed angle while the other started the timer We made sure not to pull down on the string because that caused the weight to bound while oscillating which messed up the time measurement We decided to start the timer right when the weight was released as well as letting the weight oscillate ten periods and then dividing that time by ten This helped take away the problem of human error and reaction time of starting and stopping the timer We conducted eight time trials because the recommended minimum amount of trials and it got our SE average below five percent Results We measured oscillation time at ten degrees to be 1 64 0 00627 s and the oscillation time at twenty degrees was determined to be 1 68 0 00628 s Picture of collected data Conclusion The oscillation time of a pendulum at a fixed length was approximately the same at an angle of ten degrees and an angle of twenty degrees according to our experimental data listed above Therefore the oscillation time of a pendulum is not dependent upon the angle of the swing This proves the idea of isochronous timing correct
