The article Yellowstone Scientist No We re Not Overdue for Volcanic Eruption published by Cowboy State Daily is a 3 5 it terms of reliability While there isn t much content to go off of what was said is likely true The expert Consulted is Mike Poland I was able to conform Poland is the current Scientist in Charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory In the article he claimed it to be impossible for Yellowstone to erupt anytime soon Reasons being Volcanoes don t erupt on a schedule and there not being enough magma for there to have anything happen Only being about 5 15 not nearly enough for an eruption After doing some fact checking I was able to find multiple other sources claiming the same thing about the low magma content causing and impossibility for an eruption anytime soon I did some digging about the schedule thing and he is also correct Volcanoes are very unpredictable and its impossible to predict when they ll actually explode I m giving this a 3 5 because the credibility of the author along with his evidence against eruption both line up My issue is the lack of information context given witch I had to verify on my own It seems like they did the bare minimum when writing this article and could ve used more evidence to better drive their point Don t Call It a Super volcano published by EOS and written by Mary Morton id give a 5 5 In terms of reliability EOS is an award winning magazine published by the AGU Advancing Earth and Space Sciences AGU is well known for their credibility being pro science and being very high on the scale of accurate factual reporting The author Mary Morton has a Masters is science Journalisim Morton has also published various books on the geology and composition of Yellowstone National Park Morton also quotes evidence from well known experts from the field Such as Jamie Ferrel Michael Poland Carol Stein and Shane Doyle All with hyperlinks that give more info on them and their credentials Paired with the fact that the article is confirmed to be written extremely reliable and credible geological organization and the author having a Master s degree in Science and directly quoting experts and giving the reader access to their credentials makes me give this article a 5 5 on reliability Yellowstone supervolcano could be gearing up to explode with consequences explained by Joel Day and published by Express is rather poor only getting a 1 5 in terms of reliability When you first open up the article it is organized terribly There are ads strewn all over the place along with it bocking out the article in some places I do a background check on the author Joel Day all I could not find any credentials or degrees to make him a reliable author on this topic When talking to somebody about what would happen if Yellowstone were to explode he simply refers to the individual answering the question as Narrator not giving any light to their relation to the subject or question at hand He does use some names later on that of Robert B Smith who I found works as a seismologist at Yellowstone only quoting him for saying the effects of a Yellowstone eruption would be Incomprehensible not providing any further context on why this would be the case Professor Christopher Kilburn who I was able to conform is a volcanologist at University College London said essentially the same thing as Smith just how devasting Yellowstone would be Although his inclusion doesn t really make all that much sense because he doesn t work for or in Yellowstone National Park and his only credentials being a volcanologist I have the same issue regarding pictures within the article They claim to be views of certain sites in Yellowstone but give credit to Getty images as to where they got them from Such photos could be altered and likely aren t an accurate representation of what these sites are truly like The lack of info on the author along with the article Express leaves me disappointed Matched with the poor consultation and establishment of credibility from the Experts and the photos used makes me skeptical of everything Nothing in this can be trusted 1 5 Tik Tok video 1 is not reliable It goes for a very dramatic tone claiming that Scientists fear Yellowstone will soon erupt further intensified by unspecified pictures of volcanoes in the background From prior reading and background digging from other articles scientists actually carry the exact opposite opinion saying Yellowstone has no chance of eruption in the near future They also try to insert facts witch to no one s surprise end up being incorrect claiming that Yellowstone hasn t erupted in 600 000 years not realizing that statistic is actually the average interval time it takes to erupt Not only do their claims directly contradict that of scientists but the background pictures accompanied by the audio carry no real wight to the actual issue but the fact that the facts aren t even accurate make this video terrible source of reliability 1 5 Tik Tok video 2 is the worst They use Joe Rogen a well known speaker with a successful podcast to establish credibility What they leave out is how the video of Rogen is obviously dubbed and not anything he actually said There was only one supposed fact that I could partially verify Video claims magma is rising by 1 5 inches and that s signals an eruption While the magma level under Yellowstone does indeed fluctuate it is a natural process that doesn t mean Yellowstone could explode Id give this a 0 5 if I could a 1 5 doesn t do it justice to how bad it is Third Tik Tok video is fairly reliable We have a known expert in the field Michael Poland Who we have been able to verify previously is a Scientist in charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory like the video states Poland debunks the idea that Yellowstone is due for an eruption saying there s not enough pressure or magma below the surface for it to amount to an eruption Since everything Poland is saying can be verified we can assume this video as highly factual Although its credibility does get taken down a notch or two just based on the fact this is short form content posted on the popular social media app Tik Tok Take everything you see on social media with a grain of salt 4 5
