122 Prereq BIOL 121 BIOL 121L Coreq BIOL 122L An introduction to biological principles for students majoring in biology and related fields of study Topics include evolution origin of life plant and animal development ecology F S Required text Campbell Biology 12th ed Reece Urry Cain Wasserman Minorsky Jackson 2016 Editions 8 11 will also work just fine Communication Policy Whether visiting in person or by phone call students should seek me out during office hours first Use my office hours for help with class content to resolve concerns or questions and simply to chat over coffee When looking for general answers refer first to the Questions discussion forum which is located under the Announcements header on the top of the class Moodle page I will not answer general questions regarding class content by email General questions have answers that everyone can benefit from learning and they are best asked via the Questions forum Email is an alternative way to reach me but email is far from the best option as it does not guarantee an immediate answer I strive to answer my emails within 24 hours of receipt except on weekends I am not available on weekends after 5 p m Friday through 9 a m the following Monday In case of emergencies as defined by University policy please send me an email Student Learning Outcomes Upon the completion of this course students should be able to 1 Understand and explain the characteristics that define science and how science differs from other human intellectual pursuits 2 Understand and explain the basic precepts of evolutionary theory and explain how they form a framework for biological principles 3 Understand evolutionary strategies adapted by plants and animals 4 Understand and explain basic concepts of ecology Objectives BIOL 122 is the second semester of a two semester introduction to biology for students majoring in biology and related fields of study We will lay a foundation for topics that include but are not limited to evolution ecology and plant and animal development that will be essential for success in your upper level biology coursework Grading procedures 1 Graded elements a Quizzes 20 100 points i Weekly quizzes on non exam weeks unless otherwise noted ii The lowest quiz grade will be dropped b Exams 80 400 points i Mid term exams x 3 60 100 points each for a total of 300 points ii Semi comprehensive Final exam 20 100 points c Total points possible 500 2 Extra Credit Generally extra credit will not be offered 3 Late Work Policies Make up Work Policy Late work is not accepted Except in extraordinary circumstances deadlines for all make up work must be arranged prior to missed work due to an absence for a university recognized reason If you miss due to illness you must provide a note from the Student Heath Clinic or Doctor stating that you were too ill to attend class on that day 4 Scale A 90 100 B 87 89 B 80 86 C 77 79 C 70 76 D 67 69 D 60 66 F 0 59 Academic Honesty Policy leave class for the day B Prohibited Conduct 1 Plagiarism cheating and all other forms of academic dishonesty a Examples of plagiarism include but are not limited to the following i borrowing words sentences ideas conclusions examples and or organization of an assignment without proper acknowledgment from a source for example a book article electronic documents or another student s paper ii submitting another person s work in place of his her own iii allowing someone else to revise correct or edit an assignment without explicit permission of the instructor iv submitting work without proper acknowledgment from commercial firms websites fraternity or sorority files or any other outside sources whether purchased or not v allowing another person to substitute for them any part of a course for them including quizzes tests and final examinations vi submitting any written assignments done with the assistance of another without the explicit permission of the instructor vii submitting work that was originally prepared for another class without the explicit permission of the instructor viii knowingly aiding another student who is engaged in plagiarism b Examples of cheating include but are not limited to the following i using unauthorized information materials or assistance of any kind for an assignment quiz test or final examination ii knowingly aiding another student who is engaged in cheating 2 Furnishing false information to any University official faculty member or University office to obtain academic advantage 3 Forging altering or misusing any
