Satish 1 Tarun Satish Professor Bazemore English 1101 1 November 2024 Gartner Paul Cybersecurity Threats and Vulnerabilities The Impact of AI Journal of Cyber Defense ISearch Essay and Artificial Intelligence Gartner s article in the Journal of Cyber Defense and Artificial Intelligence fully analyzes the increasing role of AI in cybersecurity especially concerning its enhancement of threat detection and response times The author looks at how AI based systems have transformed the identification of breaches that could happen quickly which has become essential due to the growth in sophistication and multi facetedness of cyber threats today Gartner 145 While improving efficiency in response Gartner illustrates how AI can proactively analyze data trends to find emerging threats well before they fully develop which is practically impossible with classic security tools Yet he digs deep into those risks that come with using AI when full comprehension and proper management are not there warning that those AI vulnerabilities themselves might be exploited in new ways by cyber attackers Gartner reports how of late some attackers have used AI driven methods to breach corporate defenses with great success proving very well how the very guards against such hacks will be leveraged to outsmart them Such an analysis by Gartner brings forward great insight into both benefits and risks that show how AI can play a dual role it s a line of defense but also possibly a gateway to new threats His balanced approach supports my hypothesis that while AI can greatly strengthen security measures it also creates new security concerns that cybersecurity professionals must constantly address This duality as discussed by Gartner resonates with my research focus on the strengths and pitfalls of AI making it a central source for understanding AI s role in the evolving cybersecurity landscape Johnson Emily and Mark Thompson Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Cybersecurity Ethics Journal Johnson and Thompson s article in the Satish 2 Cybersecurity Ethics Journal delves in depth into the ethical challenges of AI in cybersecurity raising critical questions on privacy bias and AI powered cyber attacks Johnson and Thompson 59 They stress that while the power of AI is increasing daily the deployment of AI systems should be done in a very responsible manner to prevent any possible negative consequences that it may have on privacy infringing targets by overreaching bounds They also provide some real examples where AI algorithms accidentally got access to some very personal information that was not under their remit a very problematic ethical dilemma for companies seeking to benefit from increased security due to those very systems Secondly issues with algorithmic bias in AI that Johnson and Thompson discuss include biased approaches against different users because of it even going into discriminatoriness therefore cybersecurity professionals have to perform cautionary acts They also give ethical dimensions to AI becoming weaponized for cyber attacks by showing how bad actors might leverage AI capabilities for highly adaptive targeted attacks that challenge defense mechanisms as they presently exist This article provides an important ethical layer to my study underlining that any benefits from AI are matched by a set of moral responsibilities that are often ignored Johnson and Thompson s focus on ethical awareness also correspondingly interfaces with my concerns about AI in cybersecurity particularly concerning privacy and responsibility This is therefore a good source for understanding the moral implications of AI powered defense tools Smith David AI and the Future of Cybersecurity Opportunities and Challenges International Journal of Information Security Smith s article in the International Journal of Information Security provides an expansive overview of AI s transformative effects on cybersecurity highlighting both operational benefits and emerging security challenges Smith 80 Smith illustrates how AI can automate repetitive security tasks and improve incident response times a capability that significantly enhances overall system protection and allows human analysts to focus on more Satish 3 complex issues He further dwells on the peculiar ability of AI to recognize patterns especially subtle unusual activity that could not be detected by a human operator which is a quantum leap in the early detection of threats But he also underscores that the rapid development of AI introduces serious challenges including the growing risk of AI powered attacks and the ever growing need for cybersecurity teams to be able to keep up with the latest and greatest in AI He explains that AI driven attacks are more threatening because they adapt continuously evolving with the very systems that have been designed to protect against them This adaptability places tremendous stress on cybersecurity teams needing an astonishing amount of resources and funding to keep their defenses up to date and resilient Smith s article is therefore imperative for my research since it helps give a balanced view regarding how AI can affect cybersecurity in two major ways reinforcing the mechanism of defense while at the same time being vigilant always This agrees with my research theme which argues that AI in cybersecurity needs continued innovation to create possible advantages while mitigating risks in this dynamic technological environment
