cracked replace it If you are asked to observe the odor of a substance waft the vapors to your nose with your hand The chemistry laboratory is probably not as dangerous as the average home One reason for this is that precautionary measures are constantly taken in a laboratory Chances are that no member of your laboratory section will sustain any injury if the following rules are followed at all times 1 Safety goggles are to be worn in the laboratory as required to be in compliance with State law and or as directed 2 Know the location and proper use of eyewashes and safety showers 3 Keep chemicals away from skin Chemical spills on the skin should be washed thoroughly with water 4 While heating any vessel never point it at yourself or your neighbors 5 Never heat a closed vessel or apparatus 6 7 Many chemicals have toxic vapors A good rule to follow is if it isn t air don t breathe it Use the fume hood 8 9 Heed your instructor s pre experiment warnings 10 Follow the instructions in the laboratory manual Never do extra experiments without consulting your instructor 11 Conduct laboratory work only while under the supervision of a faculty member 12 If you do sustain a cut or burn inform your instructor If it is a minor injury wash it thoroughly and cover it 13 Bulky or loose fitting clothing and jewelry can be a hazard and should be avoided in the lab Short pants or 14 Contain long hair 15 If you are required to wear a plaster cast or heavy bandages do not enter the laboratory Check with your instructor as to when you can make up missed work 16 No eating drinking or chewing gum in the laboratory 17 When inserting or adjusting glass tubing in a stopper place a towel between your hands and the glass Never 18 Keep water away from electrical equipment and outlets to avoid electrocution Not all labs are equipped with 19 Do NOT wear headphones or ear buds in the laboratory Wearing headphones prevents you from communicating ground fault interrupters Notify instructor if equipment gets wet force the glass by placing your hand over the end of the tubing skirts and open toed shoes can also be a hazard with a clean gauze pad effectively with your lab partner and instructor and can also result in missing important safety or experimental instructions during the lab period 20 Cell phones should be properly stowed in backpacks or pockets and should not be out during lab unless you have 21 In the event of a fire there are fire extinguishers available in lab Notify your instructor and people around you express consent from your instructor Use the lab period to work on your experiment and ask questions IMMEDIATELY in the event of a fire If your clothes catch fire stop drop and roll or if you are in close proximity to the safety shower pull the cord to put out the fire Safety Policy and Practices iii Experiments in First Semester General Chemistry by your instructor If your glassware is broken or cracked replace it If you are asked to
