Dee Saenz Chem 1AL 10 30 2023 The purpose of the lab for week one was being able to mix different solutions and identifying the reactions each precipitate and gas made Some methods I used while mixing solutions was carefully distributing one drop at a time for a total of 10 drops into each test tube while also shaking the test tubes to see the precipitates reactions Another method was putting the nichrome wire in the DI water then in HCl then in DI water again to clean the nichrome wire which helps prevent any unknown substance on it For parts one two and three I mixed each solution with Silver Nitrate Magnesium Nitrate and Calcium Nitrate and recorded the reactions For part four we did the flame test and had to record the color of each metal with the didymium glass filter and without For week two lab we also did reactions with solutions but with an unknown salt and had to determine the cation and anion while also doing reactions with other solutions to see if it would precipitate or not Lastly we also did a flame test to further help our analysis For experiment three week one part one some trends in solubility were that they all had some kind of precipitation with Silver Nitrate except for Sodium Acetate The precipitates resulted differently from cloudy white ppt to white gel ppt to cloudy white with gel ppt Which is accurate according to the solubility chart For part two some trends in solubility were that they all did not precipitate with magnesium nitrate except for sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide The precipitates resulted also differently from extremely cloudy ppt to cloudy with white gel ppt Which is accurate as well according to the solubility chart 2 2 For part three some trends in solubility were that they all precipitated with calcium nitrate except for sodium chloride and sodium acetate The precipitates resulted also differently from cloudy white ppt to cloudy white with white gel ppt Which is accurate also according to the solubility chart 2 32 3 The flame test is used to help determine metals calcium potassium sodium and strontium by determining the color of each flame when using the bunsen burner You can also determine each metal by using a didymium color filter which is just a purple glass and seeing the intensity each metal flame produces The purpose of looking at a flame through a glass color filter is to block the incredibly intense yellow sodium flame that covers up less intense flames from other metals The intensity of the light without the filter is extremely intense while with the didymium glass filter it appears to be subtly dim For intensity of the flame they all had a pretty strong intensity except for potassium having a weak intensity A way to test for carbonate ion in an aqueous solution is by checking a solubility chart and looking specifically at carbonate and seeing what it is soluble with and it shows that it is soluble with any group one elements plus ammonium You can also for this lab mix hydrochloric acid with ammonium carbonate and see if there was any precipitation According to the lab report no precipitation would be formed therefore leaving it to be aqueous But when you mix ammonium carbonate with silver nitrate a precipitate is formed therefore leaving it to be not aqueous but a solid 2 2 32 2 2 Precipitate formed 2 32 2 3 For my unknown substance the flame test helped determine the color of my substance which turned out to be yellow without the didymium filter which explained for it to be either sodium or potassium But with the didymium filter it was shown to be a high intensity flame with a color of a slight bluish purple Looking back at my results for week one it shows that the sodium flame test is exactly how my unknown substance is I had also done a precipitation test for my cation I took my solution and mixed it with three different solutions in different trials And resulted with NaOH only being able to precipitate 2 To nd my anion I mixed my solution with for the anion for the anion 4 2 3 32 and for the anion Mixing all the solutions individually with my unknown substance solution I was able to identify which precipitated with my unknown and which did not Doing so I were able to precipitate but after doing another step by adding silver nitrate to both I was able to identify that the from the was able to precipitate leaving 2 4 42 32 and got that both to be my anion 278 to be After carefully doing all the steps of the lab I was able to identify the unknown substance of
