To The Office of Safety and Security From Jessica Andersen Subject Utilize Access Control Systems To Enter Buildings Research for Campus Safety Date 28 March 2022 The purpose of this research proposal is to evaluate if there is a need to utilize access control systems to enter buildings on campus Due to the high volume of crime activity the safety of the students at Texas A M is our primary concern This research could help prevent violence and reinforce safety on campus Purpose Summary The safety of students at Texas A M is a number one priority Due to the increase of crime activity on campus there is a need for new safety solutions I plan to survey students about how safe they feel on campus I will take note of their responses and ask how we could improve the safety of being on campus Additionally the results from the survey can be sent to Christopher M Meyer serves as the Associate Vice President for Safety and Security Students should feel safe on campus and improving safety on campus would help others who do not feel safe As a student with concerned parents my safety is always a top priority for them I can imagine that other student parents have the same feeling For this reason I want to initiate research and work with the Office of Safety and Security Working with the Office of Safety and Security would ensure the best solutions are found to improve safety Finally once my research is complete I will present it to the Office of Safety and Security Introduction The safety and security of students has always been a prime concern at Texas A M University In response to the increase of crime activity improving security on campus for students is necessary The current safety procedures we have on campus are inadequate for today s circumstances and lack the ability to provide a safe environment for all students Students should not have to feel intimidated walking to class The question is whether implementing a key fob or student I D requirement to access each building would benefit the students and workers My proposal will provide the advantages of adding security to the campus with the ease of access College students that don t feel safe will not want to attend class or do any of the daily activities needed as a student For example meeting up with peers for team projects receiving help from professors etc The few resources that are available to defend students quickly become ineffective when they are needed for protection Thus it is recommended that the university come up with new ideas to reduce the crime on campus and make students feel safe It would be useful towards students and staff if the university added card access to all buildings to prevent predators from being able to hurt anyone The current statistics for on campus crimes is rising 8 annually causing Texas A M to be ranked 23 out of 100 on the crime index with 100 being the safest The chance of being the victim of a violent crime is 1 out of 526 making college station one of the most crime ridden cities in Texas With a student body of over 70 000 students the opportunity for crime to occur only increases When combined with the lack of solid security and massive amounts of crime the safety of students dramatically decreases and encourages predators to continue in their illegal activities This type of situation puts students in the crossfire and leaves them to fend for themselves There are some buildings that do require card access to get in however the number of these are limited There are many buildings for student courses and all the buildings are spread out over large areas forcing students to travel sometimes alone to their classes and leaving themselves exposed to potential harm With this proposal I plan to investigate and determine which buildings require card access who is allowed access and when these buildings should be deemed off limits to non students to encourage a safe learning environment For the research I have five tasks that I would execute in order to collect the data and submit my proposal to the correct office These tasks include Conduct a survey to investigate how students feel on their level of safety Find buildings to implement i d scanners Research potential companies to contract out for the job Determine how to fund the project Propose project to the office of safety and security Proposal Tasks I have proposed five tasks to complete in order to compile my research Once my research is complete I will compose a comprehensive report to present to the Office of Safety and Security Task 1 Conduct a survey to investigate how students feel about safety I intend to question students how safe they feel on campus during the day and at night After that I plan to ask in what ways we could make it safer for them Then I would create a detailed list of the results received Task 2 Find buildings to implement i d scanners A list with all the buildings on campus will be created after which I will visit each building and take notes of all of them Once I have noted all the buildings I will establish which buildings need the i d scanners as well as all the access points that will need the new safety procedures Task 3 Research potential companies to contract out for the job I would research companies that have reasonable prices and are reliable for the job Installing security systems like these are not going to be cheap but with research I can find the right company for the project Task 4 Determine how to fund the project In order to enact the proposal funding will be needed to purchase the necessary equipment therefore I will dive into our budget at TAMU and determine where the required funding can be pulled or fundraised through student events Task 5 Propose the project to the office of safety and security In this final step I will organize all the information and research relating to my proposal and schedule a meeting with the office of safety and security During the meeting I
