Olivya Fundora Professor Esther Okonkwo ENC2135 July 13 2022 Rhetorical Analysis The two artifacts I ve decided to use are an article about the positive and negative effects of corporations on society and a podcast that speaks about the importance of corporate social responsibility Being that I wish to enter into the field of law while majoring in social sciences and minoring in business I decided to choose two artifacts that stress the importance of corporations and the role they play in our society in two different ways The first artifact that I chose was an article published in an academic journal called The Conservation which is meant to bring awareness to the public on social topics The article itself speaks about the good things corporations do that benefit society aside from all the problems they create They provide resources that help communities all over the world work together in order to ignite social change Corporations contribute tremendously to our society socially economically politically and environmentally Being aware of the good they can do for our world in order to ensure they don t become victims of corruption and manipulative habits helps our society in more ways than one The second artifact that I chose was a podcast called Corporate Social Responsibility and the Capitol Insurrection featuring Dr Gary L Deel faculty director at the Boston School of Business and Dr Linda C Ashar faculty member at the School of Business Throughout the podcast Deel and Ashar talk about the practice of corporate social responsibility in businesses in order to ensure that businesses are aware of their responsibilities to our society By engaging in this method businesses are able to help enhance society in a positive way The podcast also lists several different ways in which business and large corporations can engage with the public in order to make sure they are doing their part We are able to learn should and should not be done by those who hold power in our communities and who contribute to the general social welfare Both artifacts highlight the importance of corporations and the contribution they bring to our world helping with advancement and social change using different rhetorical strategies The rhetorical appeals used the most in the article published in the academic journal The Conversation was logos and ethos By including on case studies in which research was conducted to see exactly how corporations around the world are contributing to our world socially and ecologically the author is able to use logos in order to present evidence and keep a strong argument The studies conducted specifically targeted four corporations in South Africa in order to learn about their community building efforts According to the article all four corporations have systematically contributed to the ability of five communities to enhance and maintain their members livelihoods This includes times of hardship such as environmental deterioration resource depletion dwindling food security rising socioeconomic inequality etc Through this we are able to further see how much good businesses can bring to our world if one s intentions and actions are genuine The second rhetorical appeal used in the article is ethos By including real life corporations into the case studies and researching how each business is doing their part in numerous different ways in order to ignite change in these communities it gives the readers a credible source to better understand the ways in which corporations use their resources to help out For example one of the retail companies involved in the study brought up issues with the company s significant fresh product suppliers escalating water risks Instead of switching to new suppliers the company researched ways in order to prevent these risks working with people in local and global communities Another example mentions an insurance company that became worried with the possibility of increased losses in areas susceptible to fires and floods They used their own resources to find responses to these potential risks such as contributing funds data models and their own expertise The rhetorical appeals used the most throughout the podcast were ethos and pathos Corporate social responsibility is something that many of us don t know a lot about and being able to learn a little bit about it from two experts such as Deel and Ashar ensures that we are receiving correct information Ashar teaches courses on business ethics law and management at the Wallace E Boston School of Business which makes her knowledgeable about the topic Being that they know a lot about businesses they are aware of what it takes to make sure they do the most they can to have an impact on communities all around the world Making sure that our society benefits from the resources talents and help that businesses can bring is the main goal of adopting the practice of corporate social responsibility The second rhetorical appeal used throughout the podcast is pathos The foundation of any corporation or business is the people The workers at any business are what determines if the business is successful or not By appealing to the general work population and what people look for in a company when deciding where to work it helps the audience better understand just what corporate responsibility really means People look for companies that care for their employees and the general welfare of the public not companies that only care about themselves and their own reputation If we are able to understand the importance of why companies should focus on giving back to the community then we can become part of that social change we want to see in the world There s different ways companies can give back to the community and contribute to the advancement of our society such as creating programs organizations and activities that help people interact with each other in ways that bring everyone together Both the article and podcast share a numerous amount of similarities and differences For example both use a majority of ethos and logos as their rhetorical appeals We know the information given to the public was accurate due to the fact that it came from two credible sources One with knowledge and background and another that s straight from an actual corporation itself Another similarity both artifacts give examples and list ways in which corporations have helped and can help our society using their resources talents and expertise Presenting
